I'm putting together a blown 1955 non-extended)331 hemi for my 1955 Ford F-100.I plan to have around 6 to 8 lbs boost and this should produce around 450 horsepower.I have tried reading the past threads as to what trans would be the best to use, but everyone seems to have different opinions on the subject.I have a 3.25:1 Ford 9" N rear axle and this will be mainly for street use.So what would be the easiest and most dependable trans to use.I live in Norway, so I have to get it right the first time.

    I would try and use a Turbo 400 ... but then ... I like them ...
Dependable, heavy duty and easy to work on. Will stand a lot of torque and horsepower stock and even more with a little work ... just my opinion.

4spd is the ONLY way to go !!

I once had ( and wish i still did) an adapter to put an Early '60s Ford Super t-10 on an extended bell Hemi.

I recently accuired a Steel adapter to do the same thing that i will keep for my long 331.

You can still find Old adapters or contact WILCAP for a new one.

I would look into an A~833 Chrysler Hemi 4spd, Ford T~10, Or Muncie Rock Crusher M~22.

Late Automatics are Boring, But maybe an Old Hydra~Matic conversion would be FUN !!!

I would stay in the Mopar family and go with the Hemi 4 speed. Wilcap probably has the adapter for your applications. But I must admit the old hydro idea is interesting, but really expensive. Again more adapters!

Are u referring to the clutch input shaft, or the output shaft splining?

If the input shaft, it shouldn't matter, just use the correct clutch plate.

If the output shaft, just find a yoke to match splines and driveshaft.:D

There are many kinds of A833 trans-the 18 spline was used on the hemis and bb motors. I just wondered if the 23 spline is strong enough to take 450 horsepower since they were used on the smaller motors? BTW the 18 spline is rare and pretty expensive

The 18 spline was standard behind the 426H, ALL others, including the 440-6pak used the 23 spline. The 23 spline is at least twice as strong as the muncie and and at least one-half the cost. No contest. Block adapters are available to mount the 318-340-360 bell housing and crank flange adapters will mount the 426H wheel. Stock Mopar pieces, no oddball crap to track down later.
BTW, The same adapter package mounts the Torqueflight, 727/A518.

had a 23 spline behind a built 440 with nitrous in a 70 satelite. BEAT the livin shit outta that thing and never a trans problem. Clutches - yes. The 23 spline has a 2.66 first gear.
So with a 3.25 rear You will be slippen the clutch a little during takeoffs. You might look into a TKO with the low first gears and OD You can have the high rear ratio even a 2.79
have the cake and eat it too. I just bought a 833 23 spline with the hurst linkage last summer for 300 bux. So they are affordable. FEDER

CHECK WITH DEVINSHAW! He just ran a thread on HAMB about an adapter for early Hemis to 65-67 Ford boxes.
