My Weber F-2 was perfect for my .030" over stock '42 Ford (239" +.030)
    That was in 1958.

Chris's advice should be followed to the letter. If I could have scored a Winfield SU-1A in those days, I would have used it!
You know the old 'too-little-too-late' lesson? WELL... John DeLong was a cam grinder in San Jose for years and years. (he apprenticed under Ed Winfield, as did Damon Elgin.)
They were both in the San Jose area, had I only known!
Later on, I used Elgin cams exclusively...Porsche, BMW, and Special Projects. It was 1978 before I knew about Elgin's history...Ironic?
It ALL started with Ed Winfield.

    3/4 Race! Man!

    It wasn't totally 100% race'y, just 75% race'y, but definitely better than 1/2 Race.

I've got this 59a, don't know***** about its history. But I'm guessing it has a wicked cam in it. Appears to be stock reground cam.

I can't wait to hear it run

I have a Racer Brown regrind in mine. Racer Brown in Baltimore Md. will regrind your stock cam for about 100.00 bucks. My 276 motor sounds awsome and makes gobs of power. I run a 650 holley on it and uses it all. Lots of compliments on the idle.

L 100 grind is also an option. Will sound like the 400 jr. in the you tube clip and runs well.

I get a big kick out of these discussions.
    If people only knew.
Take 6 cams from the old days with SIMILAR SPECS and degree them.
They were all pirated from one cam grinder to another.

I'm running a SU-1A in my motor. It's 284ci, upper 8's for compression. Here's a video of it when I first got the car running. I hadn't rejetted the carbs yet, and it was running a little rich.

    Thats just awesome!

  17. Both those videos are awesome. I have an ISKY 1007B as per Pete's suggestion. Small displacement 59A with a mercury crankshaft, two 97's and stock heads. I CAN"T WAIT to hear it.

There's a thread in the archives with a story written by Mike Bishop entitled "A Flathead For The Road". It is worthwhile reading for anyone planning to build a hot flathead for the street and lists several hot cams, of course, the Isky 400 Jr is his favorite pick.

I guess it's really hard to answer that without knowing what exactly you want it to do but I would post more info specific to your car and build and ask Pete what he would recommend. That's what I did and he thought the 1007B and it was a great choice. I ask for a cam that would actually work well not just one that sounded good. There's nothing worse than an over cammed engine on the street.

+1 on this. A lot of variables to give you one specific grind. That being said, those mentioned are some good choices.

Also, a lot depends on how much you can tolerate in terms of rough idle and low speed driviblity.

That being said, I'll throw in two more street cams:

-Potvin 3/8ths- With Bill Jenks' passing, I'm not sure I would trust anyone else's regrind of this cam. As Pete mention, a lot of people say they have this master, but they aren't the same. I would think the best copy would be the one Jerry @ Scheinder has. I was lucky to get mine ground by Bill a few years before he passed. Bill was a great guy and just simply awesome to talk to.

-Clay Smith 272. George @ Clay Smith is also another great guy to talk to. Plus, Clay Smith regrinds are around +/-$100 and they look like a jewler did them. 1st class operation, no doubt.

-I'm also sure Pete (his post is a few back) could hook you up with the right grind for your build.

  28. I chose an L100 in the blown engine....all of the above mentioned cams are good. Blower tames the sounds a tad imo.

Every flathead I build has a Isky 400jr in it, period. There is no other cam for sound and performance in my book.

This one is headed to merry ole' England. ;)

You dont have any problems with them being out of spec? I bought a brand new Isky 1007B and found it to be off by over 7 degrees on the intake opening. When I posted about it, I had several others reply that they had similar results too.
