The engine is a McCullough Mac90, they run like hell for little 2 stroke's. The vintage of the cart, I cant say for sure, but the engines were popular in the late 60's-70's cart racing. Sold off all of old stock of those years ago we had laying around, I really liked them.

Ive got an old dual side tank/dual engine lay down model my family used to race in the 70's, but it needs some frame work.

Good buy for $50.00, thats for sure.

Engine is likely a MaColloch (sp) Lotta karters used MAC 10's. Basically a chaisaw engine. Looks like a two stroke, so will need gas and oil mix. Probably 50 to 1. Take a look at the clutch, and see if it has an engagment rpm stamped into it. If its a two stroke it will be in the 3000 rpm range. 4 stroke clutches usually start to grip at 2K or so.

I concur with the late 60's early 70's vintage. What kid of brake set up is on it??? Mechanical link disc?

Shown is a MAC 10 in a mini bike.

Great looking kart. Your brother stole that thing for $50, but you already knew that. They have a huge following.

    it is a McCulloch engine.

they were made all the way through 77.

from the looks of it, I'd say early 70's

50 bucks! Gee what a steal. I raced karts in the mid sixtys and remember those old Rupps, I would say your kart is mid to late 60's. Sweet machine, great score!

The engine is a Mc-9 or 90 (in the later years as it has a over size carb that would be found on a Mc-101)
The clutch is a sealed oil "slipper clutch" which means that when you take your foot off the gas it will "unlock" and slip to keep the R.P.M.s up as you come out of a turn:cool:

The Kart looks like it's a mid to late sixties era machine. Probably mid 60's as it still has a front steer setup where the tie rods ans steering arms are in front of the spindles. Later machines had the arms to the back.

Engine looks like an earlier Mac 91 style. Clutch looks like an early to mid 70's vintage BurCo oil bath 'slipper" clutch. Mac engines used a reed valve setup for the intake, that's the big manifold the carb is mounted on. The reeds fit in a "vee" shape right under the carb.

The McCulloch 2 cycle engines would normally be run on a 100% methanol fuel with a few ounces of oil per gallon for lubrication. They had a contact point/condensor/magneto ignition system where you would set the spring tension on the points so that they would float at a certain RPM for "maverick" spark. This could be changed for different style tracks. Top RPM's I remember were around 11,000

Now in the Late 70's early 80's they evolved into these for racing on the big speedways like Daytona, Watkins Glen or Mid-Ohio where this was taken.

The adjustable frame would make it a Dart Grand Prix (approx 1963-65 era). It has a Bendix drum brake, which preceded the Airheart disc brakes, and the McCulloch engine has a round head, which indicates an earlier model- maybe Mc-10 or so (square head like a Mc-91 came along later). The rear tires are too wide for an original, the wheels should match the fronts (they are called Turbines). I'd advise you not to attempt to start it until you know the proper fuel/oil mixture, or you'll ruin the engine! These karts are currently being reproduced by Robron, Inc. Google vintage karts for more websites (Vintage Karts, R.E.A.R., Vintake Karting****ociation) for more info. PM me if you want more info, I have one very similar to yours. You stole it for $50, by the way.

I don't know much about old carts, but i can safely say that for $50, that's a KILLER deal. I just watched one go on ebay for stupid high money. Good Find!

  19. Stu Padasso is correct .
From what I can see the rear wheels look to have spacers in them to use the wider tires .
Great buy , You might think about servicing the motor . If it has a seal or gasket leak from sitting it will go lean and that is a BAD thing and can destroy a good mac90 .

+1 - I was thinking the same thing. I'm not a kart guru but those things go for lots of money.

Yup. My Mom has a chain saw with a similar engine. The story I heard was after the kart craze faded McC had many unsold kart engines and converted them for use on chain saws. The saw is heavy and the engine has tons of compression making it hard to pull start but it cuts like a mother. And LOOUUUD!!

Back in the early 60's I raced twin engined karts, Macs & West Bend motors. I raced an AlaKart and haven't seen any reference to that brand anywhere. It was a great, lightweight kart the handled super. Does anyone have any info on the brand??

I always wanted a Alakart, only seen one on ebay about three years ago after years of looking. Seems like the roller went for over a grand.

I have one also from the mid 60's..I can't remember if front or rear steer but the tank was more rounded [stuck out farther] and does not have the third axle bearing but was a twin engine; I may even have all the mounts but have to know where I put them ...AND what a deal for $50..!!!!..
