My Essex was finished in 1979. Pretty typical backyard-built streetrod for the time...

I turned 18 in 1974 so I was right in the middle of it.

What everybody else said but a couple more:

    "Panel" paint jobs like these.

"Rainbow Tape", it was actually silverish but turned colors in the sun.

"Pop Top" chains. Pull off a pop top and bend the tab through the loop of the next pop top linking them together. These were real common in vans.

    Heavy metal flake paint.

    Pearl paint.

Chrome 3 spoke steering wheels with wood rims!

I remember the bumper sticker, Ass, grass, or gas...nobody rides for free.

The 70's were a fun time... what I remember of it...

Cars with air shocks, Vans, big N50 tires in back, side pipes, cruising, hot pants. Lets see some more pics of 70's cars.

  15. Here are my cars from around 1978. I built the 55 from a junker that I bought in 72, but I had bought the 40 in 1977 and I was still working on "knocking the ugly off of it"! If I were you, I would just clean it up and make it your own. There's not much from the 70's that should be brought back.;):)

Everyone I knew had an 850 double pumper on a stock 327. What was with that? was is suppose to do the speed of sound because of it. It would look like the Alaskan pipeline sprung a leak coming out the tail pipe.

In England it was Transit vans covered in Murals, Morris Minors with murals and lettered tyres, buttoned dralon interiors, Camaro's called "Mister Rainbow" covered in metalflake of every colour, Fad and C Cab T's (one with a V12 even!!), and the occasional helicopter turned into a hot rod...... I kid you not! There's a few message boards out there about Rodding in England back in the day.

In the 70's Street Rod wasn't a dirty word and Street Rodders didn't wear gold chains !
It was a time about building cars to use and taking pride in what you could do and not what you could Buy ! There was no parts industry as today unless you needed
    Model A 32 or 34 chassis parts .
Your car looks very 70's . You used to be able to buy the Crushed Velvet pre sewn
with the diamonds already in it .Big 4 doors could haul a family and a trailer hitch on
the car could haul a tent trailer for weekend campouts .They used to call them
"Rod Runs" It used to be fun .If you are a real old time Rodder you probably did some
of this . Some of my favorite sayings of the time were "Take Your Rod out and Play with it ". "Street is Neat " and "Trailered Cars Suck "
Ah the good old days !
