  2. I had to look around for something that wasn't already posted. My late father's stuff came thru again.

The Staff photo - I hope that you can read it - calls one of the girls a Sex Goddess - hell, I'd get crap now a days for calling her a girl ha ha
The ads in the Hot Rod include a Super Bee for $6,000 and the Join the Army ads don't mention the Hanoi Hilton - but dig the Pinto Pride :D

  3. Ok, so however-many years ago guys started to get back into "traditional" hot rods to combat the billet and heartbeat graphics of the '80s and '90s. From this was born the r*trod scene, for better or worse, as guys interpreted or misinterpreted "traditional" and "barn find" and "patina" and took things to the extreme.

Now we are at the thin edge of the wedge as the (young, presumably) guys are discovering the later '60s and '70s... supergraphics, shag, jacked up rears and big bush... so we better get prepared for extreme '70s, the r*trod versin of the '70s.

Which of course leads us back to the '80s and hearbeat graphics etc. In 10 years there will be loyal HAMBers arguing FOR billet and hot pink and teal drybrush painting.

    Ugh.

True, this is typical of any re-interpretation of the past, whether it is poodle skirts and black leather jackets (like that's the only thing worn in the '50s) or a '60s folk singer trying to dress and sound like Woody Guthrie. (disclaimer, not that the previously mentioned examples are necessarily bad, so as not to offend...)

The most outrageous or obvious iconic touchstones of the past are the simplest ones to ape, to let those who concern themselves about what others think, that one is totally into '50s, '70s, etc. whether or not they truly represent what was going on.

That's why I like to point out that "everyone" didn't have shackles, ill-fitting wheels, etc. in the bad old '70s. (Full disclosure, my 72 Challenger had Dan Gurney slots with M-50 14s hangin' out - I didn't say I disliked ill-fitting wheels. Plus that was actually early '80s, which where I grew up it was still the '70s;)

Someday in the future, folks may look back on the mid 2000s as "oh yeah, that's when everyone had a r-- r--" Let's hope not.

look to the van. seems like dudes back then really made some funky ass vans, i think it would be a good source for styling cues for a custom.

That's not totally true. I remember going to the Post Office to see where your birthday fell into Uncle Sam's lottery, high school graduation, four years of college, a lot of beer! my first job at $8000.00 a year, buying my first NEW vehicle - 1977 Chevy stepside truck - Cordova brown! Wish I'd picked up on those Model A coupes for $150 - 300 bucks! and had a chance to by a '32 "street rod" coupe for 2500, but couldn't swing it.

All of my prime kid time was in the 70's. I remember the panel paint jobs, and the big tires on cars jacked to the moon in back.

If you want to see the 70's car styling trends in a better light, just fast forward ten years and look at all the cars with everything (even the bumpers-grr) painted pastel colors.

Years from now we'll laugh at stupid shit like floorboards made from license plates and nerf bars made from rusty old wrenches. Oh wait- we laugh at that shit now.

  16. In the 70's I drove this around a 4 sp 62 Pontiac did some street racing in the city no less

I was just turning driving age in the middle of the 70's. While there WERE a lot of ugly things going on, some guys were trying to build cool cars. While my first cat, this 57 convert. DID have some of the 70's cliches, I think today, it might still be considered a pretty nice car!
302 roller cammed engine, 4 speed, narrowed 12 bolt, Craeger SST's (just came out!), obligatory snorkel scoop, 50 series meats out back, and VW 15's up front.
1978 to be exact, took 2 years for me to build on a poor student's part-time work salary!

And if I saw either car today, right as they sit in this picture, they would still be COOL! (Although your '40 is way cooler now, one of my favorites)

After reading the posts, I do miss the jiggling boobs, burn the bra period. The bras women wear today look nothing like boobs, pretty much as silly as those pointy ones from the 50s.

Many of today's boobs don't really look like boobs, bra or not.

To drift a little further off topic--how about Pong and Air Hockey. Along with pool they were a quarter a game.

Most of my friends had their cars jacked up and Cragarfied. I kinda went with an American Grafitti thing with my car. Still had my bitchin' white guy afro in 1977.

That was the start of the "resto-rod" era around here. Almost completely restored cars with the original trim and accessories with mild SBCs usually and mag wheels. Cowl lights and luggage racks were often used. Vulcanized rubber running boards were all the rage. Gas had just gone through the first panic era reaching 3 digits a gallon!! OMG. Several streetrods were converted to V6s.

    "Street is neat!"

I don't miss anything from that era. When the billet era hit a few years later I cleaned up on all the original and old hotrod parts that went cheap while everyone else loaded up on the billet stuff. That is the only thing that I liked about that time.

There have always been traditionalists that kept the old hotrod flame still burning through the fads over the years. One size does not fit all. Some of us were true to our roots no matter what the lemmings were doing.
