Jay Wheatley was a good friend, he was the technical advisor and "stunt" driver in "Two Lane Blacktop". He did the maintenance on the two cars that were built for the movie and all the driving in the track scenes. He and his brother, Buck, raced stock and super stock Chevies and was asked to work on the film while they were racing the AHRA Winternationals in Phoenix.

When the shooting was finished, Jay came back home and immediately applied for unemplayment compensation from the state. When asked what he did, his reply was "I'm a stunt driver. I went to A&P and McDonalds, but they don't need any stunt drivers".

During the filming, Jay formed a friendship with James Taylor and later drove his tractor-trailer to all his show gigs. He also did the same for Kenny Rogers before loosing his life in a boating accident. Jay was a really cool guy!

  3. Another goodie is the scene where the shill with the wagon is trying to get Brian to race and asks what powers the Willys... "Black and Decker aquarium pump." Priceless...

Anybody else remember this movie originally being titled "Dancing in the Streets"? I was 12 in 1979, but I watched it when it FIRST aired, and that name has stuck with me for some reason...maybe because that's the closing music.

  4. that is cool. hot rod the rebel! i wondered if any one remember it and here we have found like minded people.... lol. i love that flick, gotta find it now, we have drive-in t.v. here. gotta be a web sight to it so as to request, i hope. how about an obscure robert blake movie circa 1973 called corky. drove a cuda fastback high on the body mods, painted pink/rose color. any one remember that one ?? take care , turbo.

Wonder what happened to the spindlemounts that were on the Willys when it sat in the "shop" about the time the kid comes up with the wooden version.

Even though there are Numerous goofs in that movie, I still love it. Some notable goofs from the young, untrained eye:

Obviously, the sound of the car after he picks up Jenny at the Root Beer Stand. You hear it running through the gears, even before it leaves the parking lot. Generally, the sound of the Willy's changes during the movie and you NEVER hear the tale tale Mopar starter whine when the Hemi fires.

The above statement about the spindle mount magnesium rims - they wouldn't in their right mind, pull those for black steelies, would they?

The fast forwarded drag racing scenes were a nice touch. Expecially the people walking in the background at high speed.

The "replacement" Hemi, that came out of an AMC Matador 4 door, complete with aluminum finned valvecovers and 2 four barrells.

The 6-71 Blower induction differences during the movie. One time it has 2 fourbarrels, another time an Enderle Bird Catcher, then back to the dual quads.

many, many technical error in this film. I suppose it gives it "character" but it is hard to believe the producers would be so careless.

The movie is available on many internet sites, just google it. It was also called "Rebel of the Road"

I see it offered for sale at big car shows, like World of Wheels, etc. where a vendor is selling DVD repops of old car movies. Last year at Hunnert Car Pileup the vendor had the movie running on a loop on one of the TVs he had setup. As I was standing there, the scene with my Olds played. Kind of a weird feeling. My DVD is almost wore out.

We are putting black steelies on front of our primer gray Willys. Wide Al slots on back. Hemi with dual quads. Nice thing is, almost anything would be correct because the movie was so incorrect.

Took me many years to track down one of those Hemi powered Matador squads

I have a similar question about a movie I saw as a kid, hope its ok if I borrow this tread.

It was a hotrod movie ( maby from the 80`s) Older brother has been building a hot rod ( i think it was a red deuce) then goes in to the army, and he gives the car to his younger brother. The younger brother finishes the car, and then get the news that his brother has been killed in action.

I was very young when I saw it, so I could have gotten some details wrong.

In the film and movie industry, the late 70's untill about 1982 are considered to be the "dark days" of the industry, where quality and attention to detail were poorly lacking..... Not unlike the automotive industry I suppose :D

Since were on the subject, Anybody remember "Return to Macon County" with Don Johnson and Nick Nolte? Lots of technical errors on that one, and a crummy remake of the 2 lane black-top plot,,,, but the cars were cool!

Funny - I always thought one of the best things about the movie was the fact they had to pick the door up every time they wanted to shut it. :) ;)

At least you're bringing the kid up right. Took my 10 year old grandson Friday night for his first time at the races to see the Wing 410 cars run, and now he's got a model of his favorite car signed by the driver on his dresser and a poster of the race queen on his wall. My daughter and son-in-law don't know what to think, but once a kid hears a 410 at full wail, there's no going back.

    Don,

Nope ... that's how the name of the fictitious city & drag strip in the movie was spelled ... "Lyons, CA" ... and "Lyons Drag Strip" (have a gander at the patch on the cop's jacket in the still photo I attached to my post).

I also heard that a member of the L.A. Roadsters was the technical adviser for the movie ;) ... maybe that's why it was so full of inaccuracies :D:rolleyes::D

hotrod-kenny ... Sounds like the 1980 movie "The Hollywood Knights" ... starring Tony Danza, Fran Drescher, Michelle Pfeiffer, ... and Tony Nancy (as himself).

If I'm not mistaken, it was an AMC cop car to boot.

  22. Neither, the kid in Van Nuys Blvd had a custom van, in Hollywood Knights it was a yellow '40 Ford(I remember the car had no hood, and frog mouth scoops with yellow painted inside them; when I first saw the movie, I instantly remembered the car from a book I had when I was a kid, now lost) and he was set to leave for Military service the next day.

  23. I am stumped on this one.

Wondering if someone has a JPEG of the cover artwork for the movie "Hot Rod" with the Willys. I'm looking to make up a poster for my toy cabinet next to the Hot Wheels Classic Willys that I primered grey like the one in the movie.

    Thanks
