This is for all the Portsmouth Va boys out there in HAMB land. There were several places that we raced but the main event was on the Canal Banks in Deep Creek. George Washington had surveyed this very early inter coastal waterway that was dug by slaves. Sorry, I digress, the unique thing about this spot, other than it was flat and straight was that you staged in Virginia and if the fuzz came, and it was amazing that they came very seldom, you drove on in to North Carolina. My time was from about 1964-1967 and it was not uncommon to get 6 to 10 cars running for cash bets and 50+ spectators on the banks. When a 67 L88 Vett went into the trees that was sort of the death knoll of that era , not to mention the after shock of Haight Asbury in San Francisco, well it was 1967..................All the usual disclaimers apply:eek:

  2. LOWER RIVER ROAD!!!It was in vancouver Wash across from portland where we cruised broadway and then 82nd ......depending on how big of assholes the cops were, sometimes we hit the DQ in vancouver,LRR was a long deadend road past the Alcoa plant (road now blocked off) but we had many great nites out there

  3. No SHIT!!!

Let's see, there were/are several. In Everett, there was State Hwy 526, AKA the Boeing Freeway; at one time it was called Pacific Speed Raceway, with a start and finish marked right on the roadway, along with the NAME. Then there was the "Marysville Flats", through the bridges, as there was no place for the cops to hide. River Road. Airport Road. Hardeson Road (business park). Then, in the Seattle area, there was Golden Gardens Park, AKA Golden Gardens Raceway (there were even decals made up). Harbor Island. And various business parks used by mostly the "tuner types". Most are long gone, or heavily patrolled with serious fines for racing OR spectating. In Lynnwood, when I was in high school (66-69), there was 48th Street, know as 48th Street Raceway; long and straight, but with ups and downs in the roadway; it's where I usually did my "testing", and was "rural", with only a few homes; now it's one development after another. That sure sounds right! Last time I would have been out there on that stretch of road would have been 1980 or so. Moved to Hollywood and found out that nice fast cars get stolen all the time when you are forced to park on the street. Got to know the Hollywood impound garage pretty well. Ended up finally with a POS Chevy Luv that the rateros wouldn't touch. Had to move to Colorado to get back into the hobby.

Looked on Google maps and see there is still a building on the corner at Wiley Canyon. Nothing else around there back in the day. EVERYBODY from Hart High hung out at Bob's after a game or dance. Times have changed, apparently...

Arlington VA, the H road. Between the Pentagon and the Iwo Jima Memorial. Doubt that's a viable spot now, but it was for many years. Also Kensington St in Green Valley was the site of a big bust once. Wide street but that area was loaded with cops. Never seemed like a good idea to me.

All us South Jersey boys raced on Front Street in Philly, in front of the Oscar Mayer plant. If the cops came we either went to 11th St. next to JFK stadium or the only good stretch of Delaware Ave. and back to Front, until they finally got pissed and opened up the hydrants. There was even a band with a minor hit called John Eddy and the Front Street Runners.

Yeah. Dam was 1/4 mile on top. Whoever was ahead took inside lane to long sweeping left hand curve. 2 beachs 1 on each side for backseat gymnastics and the state park for restrooms.

A couple more SoCal spots .....

    "The Wash"
North Valley Center Ave along the storm wash above Glendora High. 'Til they built so many houses ......
    "The Groves"
Baseline Rd through the orange groves east of Glendora. Rolling hills area, ditto the road.
    "The River" or just "Rivergrade"
Rivergrade Rd along the Santa Fe Dam wash, past the circle track. Prior to the 605 (Rivergrade Fwy).

    "Burger Lane"
I missed this one but have heard it was a drive-through on or near Hillcrest above Monrovia where, at some point, they even pulled trailered cars in. Anyone been there?

Pine Street in Essexville, MI, adjacent to Bay City. "I'll meet you out on Pine after 2nd shift" was the usual challenge to someone you wanted to race. If they showed up you "got it on". If they didn't word quickly spread that they couldn't/wouldn't meet the challenge. Having someone not show up was as good as winning, sometimes even better if the guy you chose off stood a good chance of beating you but still didn't show.

Used to race Bismarck Expressway and Old Yegen Rd. Which went by the Yegen farm in Bismarck, ND. That was in the 1990s. Old Yegen had been in use since my Dad raced it back in the 60s and probably before then. I went out to the Yegen rd they built now and the funny thing is it starts at a T-intersection and the RR tracks are nearly 1360. Cruised Main all night long and a bunch of us had the original cell phone (C.B. Radio) before we pretty much all disbanded in around 1996. Used to hang out at different parking lots up and down main but mainly Big Boy drive through lot (no seating inside) on the east end. Some raced River Rd. But, IMO there were too many curves. I was crazy but not stupid. Had a fast 79 Dodge pick-up that was rusted to crap with a 360 and a 58 Chevy 4 door Biscayne with the old 235 and 3 spd OD and 4.11s(think the 4.11s were probably what made it pretty quick). Long live the Bismarck-Mandan C.B.ers Association, lol.

We had two main strips--"Kirby stretch" about two miles out of town on Route 7, and a 3/8 mile long stretch (perfect for 1/4 mile run and shutdown) on Route 206, also a couple miles out of the village. For just good old tire burning fun, there was "the dump road"--officially named Case Road, but the old village dump was on it. It was a paved road, but the pavement was old and very smooth; just the surface for seeing how long a black strip you could put down. One year, I held the record for a one wheel peel with my '67 Electra 225 winter car.

Cemetery Road. It was a dead end road, and nobody lived there.
