When we came over a hill and saw this! Bonneville SALT! And knowing that some of my family and friends that had been sick this year would be just fine.:) B

My divorce in 2007 was a huge blow to my ego and my self-confidence. I spent the first few months holed up in my house, too ashamed of what people thought to even venture outside. After many bad days and many worse nights I decided that something drastic was required.

I packed my bag lightly and headed to the most out-of-the-way spot I could find: Northern Myanmar, the most remote destination that the military junta Tatmadaw would let a lone American venture without escort.

Over a month on the road, negotiating my way through a completely alien culture in which I could not even ask directions, I always managed to find shelter, food, and friendship among the Burmese people.

On the night of my birthday I slept in a monastary high atop a mountain outside of Lashio on the old Burma Road. I'm neither Buddhist nor fanatic, coincidence just presented the opportunity on that exact day.

Deep in that night while I lay on the bed with my back against a wall I listened to the sound of the monks chanting in their separate meditation chambers. The sound echoed down the ancient hallways in which only candles burned to hold back the darkness.

I remember taking stock of my situation as I sat in the darkness. How I had come all the way around the world to this spot, completely alone and dependant entirely on my own wits. And my wits had never failed me. I was not the weak link.

That night released many of my demons. The past became just that and I felt equipped again both mentally and spiritually to venture back out into what had scared me far more than the harsh SE Asian outback: my daily life in the USA.

I returned from that trip with fewer burdens than I started with. And have refused to shoulder new burdens since.

I am going to limit this to automotive experiences---Driving my 56 Plymouth Suburban 13,000 miles in 08 and taking trips to Lone Star Roundup, H.A.M.B. drags and putting the old girl down the strip, breaking my goal of 30 sec. e.t., trip to KKOA in Salina with my daughter ridin shotgun, cruzin to K.C. for a wonderful time at Greasarama, a short trip to a little show at a Retirement home that was a surprise yielding about 60 cars!! And a bunch of local cruz/meetings with my Roadburner fellow members! Also hanging with all of the H.A.M.B. members both on the puter and at events. Looking forward to a great 09 repeating most of these experiences! Thanx to all you guys and gals of the Jalopy Journal family for all the cheap thrills!! A special shout out to the great Earl Schieb for his relay assistance at the drags helping me get my new short block home from Mokan!!~Sololobo~

    Sounds like my year.
My highlight would be my mates that stood beside me in some bad times, you guys on the HAMB that have become long distance friends.

Im now just one of the HAMB wanna-be's without a car. Had to sell it (Second in as many years) to fight for my rights and to help a recently passed mates family with Veterans Affairs trying to get what we are told are our 'Rights' that they deny us.
One day I will have a car that I can keep...... I hope.

    Doc.

Many many blessings. The ability to add three more projects to my collection. The addition of a Wagon, yes a '64 Rambler that in a short three months has been completly redone nose to tail, pan to roof. Just need upholstry that will be added in the next week or so......

But the biggest thrill is that after following her journeys for the last couple years I finally got to meet Denise at Bowling Green. I seen first hand what a wonderful ambassador she is for the passion we share. She is always cruising, smiling, socializing, and most of all documenting her experiences so that we not in attendance can for a moment experience the thrill through her eyes.

Thank you Denise as well all the great folks out there that make this world better by and through the passion we share..............:)

i had a few best moments.

the first was firing up my 55 and driving it, after a year and a half rebuild, new motor, radiator, trans, drive shaft, rearend, wiring harness, relocated the battery, and shaved the handles................and i did it without any help, i'm most proud of that fact, the only bummer.....i've had to remove the "brand new" trans 4 or 5 times in the last 6 months.....damn it

then the weekend of the primer nats, shot up there saturday with my cousin in his 52 ranchwagon(because the trans was out in my 55).....great show.....then we went dove hunting on sunday.....awesome weekend

then the mooneyes show/weekend....went with my uncle and cousin, in my cousins 52 wagon(because the trans was out...again in my 55).....one of the best shows i've been to.......then on sunday, we went pheasant hunting....bitchin weekend

hopefully next year i'll get to drive my 55 to a show......

The summer of 2008 was terrific for us. We took the willys to the Hot Rod Reunion in bowling green and received a top 50 pick out of 1,600 cars. With that win came tickets to the NHRA nationals at indy. We had been on tour with the S&S Race Team which includes pork zartman. It was his 45th anniversary of winning indy with the filthy forty and we put him under the wheel to take the car down the track in the parade of winners. He had the biggest smile on his face. It was great. We are extremely lucky to call them all our friends.

Best:Having two other shops come up to me after speaking at SEMA and tell me that what I had to say at the seminar was the best info they ever got from someone in the industry.

    thats automotive wise...

Worst: the day my mother in law passed away after a 13 year fight with a stroke. Dana is still not over it (although she would say she was) and the holidays were hard for her.

Got married, and my dad played chauffeur in his stock '49 Ford Woodie. He and I worked really hard putting down the varnish and new stainless bolts, and polishing the chrome. can't really see too much of the car, but I like this picture. oh yeah, and my wife looked incredible too! hahaha.

Also, I did some pinstriping on a friend's car that was invited to be in building 9 of the GNRS in a few weeks. That was pretty cool--that he trusted me enough to lay down some lines on a car that will be at GNRS.
