Mid 1960s, my cousin gave me a total basket 354 hemi, 2x4 manifold with NO carbs, aluminum adapters for the Lasalle trans which was also included. A bunch of bolts were missing to put it together, plus NOBODY wanted an outdated motor then....it all went to the local dump
21 years ago. An Erson TQ-20H camshaft. I felt pretty ********, all my buddies were starting with chrome valve covers and a holley. In a couple years that car is slated for a rebuild and we'll get to see how round those lobes are now......
A used "Burns" 2 x 2 manifold for my Model A. I believe that it cost $20, which was a lot of money in 1961.
I was 15 and my dad got me a Mallory dual point for my birthday - to go in my 71 Camaro. Still have the dual point and it's in my Plymouth coupe now. "The Wife"
How about a trans-dapt adapter (from Honest Charlie's) to mount a Packard 3-speed behind my 55 Pontiac 287..which was a factory manual trans car... Not long after I learned true wisdom and found the Pentastar.
about 1960 my father got me my first set of wheels, so I guess this was my introduction to "hot rodding". The sidewalks were never safe again, no trikes or two wheelers bothered me!
I was 15 and running with an "older" kid in high school who had a 50 ford with a 53 merc motor. Had an offy 4 barrel intake with a 55 buick Rochester carb and a chrome air cleaner. I was entranced and began looking for my own 50 ford. Found a 50 crestliner and bought my buddy's 4 barrel intake setup to go on my very own 53 merc engine ...$15. Photo taken in '65
That took some thinking. The first "speed part" I bought was a 3 speed floor shift for my 51 Merc when the shift tube broke when I was 16. It was one of those cheapies they sold at the time that got hung up between gears at the wrong time.
I was about 18 yr old in 1963 going to tech school and got a used 2 - 1 OFFY manifold for a 216 that i put on the 1954 235 and a homemade split with flex tube, 7 th heaven, even had a chrome fuel block, run OK and got great mileage never had anything decent, then went to stock cars after Nam and got some nice toys and doing a 1930 Fd and the sky is the limit now, time to make up for missed times!!!
My first piece was a Minister's Daughter named Katie...errrrr, I mean a Moroso deep sump oil pan (with the big notch for the drag link for my 66 Chevy II) followed shortly afterwards by a 3 Deuce setup my parents gave me for a birthday present back in high school. I rebuilt the carbs over February vacation and had something new to show off in shop cl*** The Tri-power lasted longer than Katie did........ Al in CT
In about 1962 I bought a used Duntov 20/20 solid lifter cam and lifters. That made the old 283 pickup and run. Hooley
1989 i bought a crane 268? cam for the small block ford in my 100e prefect then put the engine in a 105e anglia and installed a edelbrock intake and 600 holley this engine reved like a bike because it was so loose musta done two hundred thou i never seen pistons move around the bore that much before or since but the the thing is still runnin in the same car!!
An Edelbrock SP-2P manifold for the big block chev in my pickup. It was my main purchase on my first trip to the Portland Swap Meet. I think my truck performed better with the cast iron manifold that was on it before. Dave
chrome 15 inch wheels and a cheap bright blue glitter steering wheel for my 1965 mustang fastback. The car is long gone, but I still have the original steering wheel center/ horn ****on that I pulled off in 1975. Since it's been in my sock draw for over 30 years, it's almost like new! A great souvenir of my first car.
when i was 15 my mom asked me to go to this neat yard sell with her.when we got there.the woman had a bunch car parts &tools setting out with REAL low prices.i bought a pair of traction bars , edelbrook intake ,nice pair of ****** headers (that fit my 73 camaro)a like new set of snap-on screw drivers .all for $30.turns out the wife had just filed for divorce .......
BBC moroso valve covers, got em for 3 bucks, the need re-painted thou, the shop wall is levein em all un cool lookin
I did the bolt on glitter stuff. A cherry bomb and an open element air cleaner. It was audable power. Later I picked up a 289 hypo intake and a big Holley 4 bbl, for a different car. And then added an accel ignition "kit". It wasn't a lot faster but it ran very well. As for the ladys, no comment.
I was 11 years old. Gold anodized Moroso valve covers and matching air cleaner for the 37 Ford 4 door flatback in the garage. Looking back, I'm not sure what I was thinkin' about wanting those things, especially on that car... But I got 'em for Christmas!
AHH-- The first peice!!!!!!!! I bought a 58 Ford 2-door sedan with Police Interceptor engine from the local I-H farm dealer. Some cat traded the car in on a **** spreader!! The peice was the whole car I guess. And about that other thing Her Name Was Susan and it did work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A Weber 45 dcoe sidedraft carb for an import build (1972 Datsun 1200). Man that thing would rev, at least till i hit a big dog at 115 mph.
I was 15 and she was 14 in the back seat of a '57 Chevy... Oh! Speed equipment..... Summer of '65... A Hurst 3 speed shifter for the '57 Chevy... Didn't take long to learn how to repair those ******s.
A Holley double pumper and a set of ****** headers in 1976. Man, it was fun driving around the block like that with open headers, scaring the whole neighborhood. Then some dual J.C. Whitney "bullet" gl***packs the next day to tone it down a little.
Bought a set of ****** headers for my cuda and spent about 4 days putting them in! Those were the days!
Speed piece: Hi octane go-go juice for my gas. Don't think it helped much, but I was flying in my mind! Other piece: Ohhhhhh Jenny........gotta love memories from catholic school. You know the deal...PDS " Preacher Daughter Syndrome"
It was an Accel Super Coil for my '70 Skylark. My Dad gave me the "I can't believe you wasted you money on that" speech. As usual, he was right...
