Hello y’all I just bought a 1951 F5 Ford and I’m a little worried about doing anything with the wheels due to the “widow maker” stories I’ve seen. Can you tell if these are the Firestone “widow maker” wheels? I’ve seen some mentions of other wheels that can be used instead but want to find a set of wheels with similar size. Anyone know of good option? Sorry I did a search but thought this might give me direct info. Thank you
you need to figure out how to post full size pictures...those are tiny, with no detail. Or read up on the subject. There are some places that explain it http://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2017/05/these-specific-rims-are-what-is-known.html is one. Or google Firestone RH-5
There is a guy over on the FTE that is the guy for all things window maker. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum42/ truckdog62563
Those are 20'' Budd split rims, used in the trucking industry with great success for over 100 years. Certainly they can hurt or kill a person .... just change a tire without cleaning the rust & scale from all the parts, hammer the lock ring down without making sure it seated completely, then stand over the wheel while you air it up without wrapping a chain thru each of the 5 holes or using the guard every tire shop had. Simply put, if the job is done correctly, nobody gets hurt .....
If the two halves of the wheel lock over each other in the center of the wheel those are called Widow makers . There’s aftermarket wheels available that replace them . 22.5 diameter. $350-450 apiece. I buy take off tires off school buses that have plenty of tread left for my old farm trucks. The Feds have set a 5 year usage limit on school buses . There’s a couple tire shops where I live that will still repair the widow makers $65-$75 per wheel
Way to make friends with people that are willing to help you even if they have a different way to say it..
