I've got a neighbor who works at the iron and metal recyclers in town. thats his day job. he is an english trained blacksmith / metal artist and gets his " found" objects for his art at the yard. He doesn't know cars yet...i'm trying to educate him. I was at the recylcers last week buying tubing and as i was paying a nice falcon came in. I don't know what year. Before i could finish up and get to it they had piled another car on top of it. I got the tail lights....thats it. A chevelle came in friday and i got the engine...same thing...piled a car on top of it....then moved it so they could fire wrench it apart. WTF???
The local ranchers are pulling all their old tin off the back 40. The word is out that scrap is paying well. I've got my projects for the rest of my life and maybe one or two for my son. As for the younger generation....My 7 year old son knows what a hotrod is....he was welding and pinstriping this weekend...neither one well...but he is 7.

My little Bro is the same way he is allmost 19 and just cares about video games. Hell he doesnt even own a car yet. I had one when i was 13 i couldnt wait to drive. He just wants to find a honda that gets good mpg. I tried and tried to get him into cars but he could care less. Now most of the kids i grew up with are all car guys now. 90% are into imports but a few mess around with old shit.
Im kinda spoiled where i live. I dont see the demise of the hobby so much as most i guess. Every other house has a muscle car or a hot rod in the drive way or garage. and every day after 6 or on sunday the neighborhood is alive with rumbling engines. its nice to sit out back grilling some food and hearing all my neighbors fire up there rides to go get ice cream or some shit. But where i live has a lot to do with that. And any given night you can go to woodward ave and see at least 10 cars cruising. They may be 99% muscle cars but hell thats what im driving too right now.

Do your part and help the little guys. I let my neighbor kid come over and beat on some parts every now and then. His dad has a mean ass 70 buick GS and i know he will be a hotrodder when he grows up.

i agree that it looks semi -grimm for the hobby/industry, but you have to take into account the common conceptions of the day too. folks everywhere young and old want their stuff instantly. building a car of any kind is not nearly as instant as say going to the saturn dealership and buying a sky roadster as it is to build a roadster. plus the actual money you need to have to build a car has to be upfront mostly. why do that when you can get in a car for nearly if not all but no money down and financed for up to 7 years?
also, folks spend more time doing everything else under the sun but tinker on cars now a days, to most folks working on anything in their spare time that actually costs them money is insane. my own car projects have been delayed years on account of house remodeling, prepping my accounts for the baby on the way, finding time to spend with family, and the general day to day sort of stuff that we all take for granted but has to be done.
you can also add that quality projects/parts are getting exceptionally difficult to find and once you do find them they might as well be made of gold for the cost (no thanks to barrett jackson and ebay). i mean just back 5 years ago i could get a good roller 27 coupe for $500-$1500. now rusted hulks that should really be scrapped go for $4500. insane.
and the biggest reason i feel is, people everywhere are a lot more broke than anyone admits. you see it everywhere. people are so cash poor that they have new mortgages for 60 years if you want. foreclosures are at a long time high point. gas costs $3/gal, i still dont know how some folks make it on anything less than $40,000/yr, let alone fool with an old car. then you add kids and their "hobbies", higher taxes every year, ecological stuff to consider, actually having to fund your own retirement because pensions are a thing of the past, one or two trips to a hospital or hell even rountine chiropractic care, supporting family members who definitely dont have it as good as you do, the never ending inflation and the inability of the government to stop it and it goes on and on. theres just not the income to compensate for it all and still have everything that you want.
