on another car board I visit somebody was telling the tale of a stock charger doing 175 MPH on the hiway and the cops chasing him and letting him go. said the cop told him he clocked it at 175. my ******** meter was pegged.

he did say it was a Hemi. and I can see mathmatically how it could be done with gearing x RPM

so any of you Bonneville types think this could have happened?

I have no solid input other than to say that EVERYONE who's not a car person thinks the fastest car they've ever been in goes 220mph, in my experience. I really posted to ask you for a link to the thread, though. I wanna watch...

Man, that General Lee sure can fly...

I would bet it would be feasable... but doubtful. I know alot of the ignorant non-car types think a car will do whatever the factory speedo reads...

definately "possible", but not likely. . . it would take some pretty serious horsepower unless the car was really heavily mod'd. I would say 600 rwhp, good tire/wheel setup, and the right suspension. . .

I'm just guessing, but I think 1000hp should be close.

If he was doing 175, how did cops catch him to "let him go" ?

    you cant outrun the radio!

maybe a stock hemi, high gears, and nitrous?

.. he claimed the cops told him they were up to 130 and backed off. they caught him later when he slowed down. they must not have had any radios.

then he claims they let him go. a more likely scenario would be they beat the **** out of him and impounded his car.

These were my thoughts, but who am I to argue with the vast knowledge of those on the internet?

he did mention the motor was modified.. the car itself was a stock street car.

  10. 175 Kilometers per hour maybe, thats about 109MPH. They were turning 170 ish at NASCAR when they ran these cars, but that was heavily worked over motors and HI-way gears. Not a stock car off the lot.

one of the believers got out his trusty calulator and did some math 3.23 gears, 30" tires and 7000 RPM= 186 MPH

guess he thought it was a math quiz.

Nascar driver Buddy Baker was clocked at 200.447 MPH at Talladega motor speedway on March 24, 1970 in a stone stock Daytona Charger,,,

Doing 175 on the street and being let go,,,,,********! HRP

I've personally gone 145 in my '68 Charger R/T......engine was basically stock at the time (headers and aluminum intake) with 3.23 gears...running @ 6200 RPM.......

Now, the aerodynamics on a stock Charger are OK, but at 145, the front end gets really light......I find the 175 a little hard to swallow...

Nevermind could it do it, but WHERE could it do that? Those cars didn't turn worth a damn, and didn't stick much better. He'd have had to be on an enormous stretch of straight road, which makes the cop story less relevant. What cop could get close to something going near that fast from a standing start in a speed trap?

And to the mathematical geenyus, he forgot a little bit of his equation.....aerodynamics. Unless the cliff factor came into play, I still don't think it'd happen.

Sinister's right, there's a m***ive difference between 145 and 175 in both aerodynamics and horsepower required.

Many hot rod mags ago I read of a 68,69 charger that went 188? or so with 550 lbs of torque according to the article. It was a silver state article. I have been over 140 mph myself in a modern car, no thanks with 60's suspension. **** happens lightning fast at that speed as many of us know. The street just ain't designed for that kind of speed. I am thinking it's a ******** story. Probably 120mph.

I have the Hot Rod issue with that Charger in it.....it was a black '68, the grill had a flush mount insert, the windsheild had clamps on it to keep it from "popping" out at speed, stock car type wheels, upgraded suspension.... but overall, the car was not far from factory and still street legal..........owner was building a '68 RoadRunner with a Hemi to go over 200 for the Silver State Challenge......

Honestly, it's not too tall of a tale. Definitely an exaggeration, but the truth is probably not too far off. I'll believe 150 if it's equipped with a Hemi, that thing was a beast.

Buddy Baker did NOT run 200 mph in a stone stock Charger. It was a NASCAR spec, highly modified, Charger Daytona (e.g., wing + front fascia aerodynamics that allowed it to run so fast).

On a 426 Charger, highly doubtful you could run that fast on public roads. Forget the engine + gearing, the aero on those cars ****ed, which is why Dodge/Plymouth made the Daytona/Superbird. With standard brakes that thing would be flipping end over end or in the weeds going that fast. Perhaps the logical explanation is the discrepancy between speedometer and actual speed, although to suggest it being off by more than 10 mph is a stretch, there's no way the guy went 160 IMHO. 130, maybe, but not 175.

  24. I have personally driven about 160mph in my 1969 Dart. The front end gets WAY light. I did not need much road to get up there either. I also needed a change of shorts afterword. You could watch the edges of the hood curling up from the pressure in the engine compartment.

I have been up over 175 in a 69 Daytona Charger as a p***enger with a nicely built 440 with a 4 gear and 2.79 rear gears. It had A LOT left and was rock solid stable - it was like doing 70mph but light standards were just flying by.

Standard Chargers have the same issue as my dart in the front with air getting underneath it, and the rear window design on them with the tunnel, makes the rear get light also. I have heard however that they would do 140-150 with a 440 or hemi. 175 would be a sphinter tightening experience.

EDIT - I can also attest to anything over 150mph being a white knuckle experience. Every crack on the road makes the car dart to one side or another, and you come up on stationary objects realy really reallllly fast. I once drove a modded vette up to 308kph (~186mph) and it was all over the road from the road imperfections. The owner later had it over 320kph. When I p***ed the cop chasing someone else at over 300kph, it was like he was standing still. And I was really lucky I didn't get caught.

Von Rigg - you nailed it, at 150 that thing must be like a death trap. On a closed course, I could see doing it but on public roads that's a flying brick.

  27. 175 MPH ??? They are just messing with us, to make conversation. But, hey my daughter took her newer Cavalier to 120 mph, just because that is where the speedo ended. Why? Parenting is hard work.
