I'm with this. Every guy I know thinks hes gone 175 in a 60's chevelle, corvette, mustang, whatever.... and I'd wager 1000 bucks that none of them ever saw 130 on the street. Read the Road and Track test to 200MPH with the Viper and the Bugatti (that Viper is for sale on Ebay right now and is a bargain at $250k...comparatively speaking). Anyway, even if they could do it, there are few roads that you could pull it off on. I got up to 119 on I-74 once (or twice...) and even with what I'd consider to be "no traffic" things came up frighteningly fast, the car got light in the nose, and the slightest road imperfection was concerning. I also p***ed two state police cars at SR9 while doing this. They were in the median talking, and no, they did not catch me...at first. When they sent a radio call for a roadblock up ahead, they weren't far behind. I was physically removed from my car and "fell down" a few times while being rightfully cussed out. Then I received a lovely bouquet of tickets to take with me back to the Shelby County lockup (while my car was towed to the impound lot) where I spent the remainder of the weekend until my court appearance on Monday. This little episode cost me nearly $1000 (and I'd say I got off easy) plus two days in jail, impound fees, and more. I could have easily cost my license (and should have). I was not drunk or doing anything else stupid (this was enough) and I was as polite and apologetic as I could be (while eating gravel on the side of the highway with a boot on the back of my head) and at no point would I say that the police considered just "letting me go". I don't typically believe stories where the police are impressed enough with your stupidity to not give you a ticket.

I got a 104 in a 65 about a year later (stupid kid...slow learner) on I-69 and the police officer was VERY kind enough to knock it down to 84 in a 65 (to avoid reckless driving, impound, etc...) and told me that if I even showed up in court, he would, and I quote "Crucify" me. I do believe that the only reason he cut me any slack was because it was the first week of the new unmarked Camaro's in Indiana and I think he enjoyed seeing what it could do (and he did physically catch me very quickly), and because it was the end of his shift and I was about to be a whole bunch of time he didn't want to spend. Still, he did not consider ever just "letting me go". I also gladly paid that big ticket by mail. I don't go over 80 now unless I'm on a track. Too many things can go wrong. I don't want to kill anyone, be killed, eat gravel, go to jail, or pay large fines again.

I call ******** for the reason of cops and road/traffic restrictions. It would take that car over 2 (maybe 3) miles of uninterrupted perfect road to do it plus some time to bring it back down from warp speed. I just don't see it.

Here is the good article about what it takes to do 200. 180 is damn close. This will give you some insight into the exponential difficulties of hitting a number that big...both performance wise and condition wise. Of course, I'm sure every neighborhood has a car that can beat these... :)

Well,,, let's see. In 1969 I had a Formula S Barracuda with a factory stock 383 330 hp engine, 4 spd with a 3.23 gears and had it up to about 145 on a very long straight road after coming off a relatively tall bridge. I doubt that I could have gotten another 5 mph out of it, but maybe. If I recall the Cuda had a stock 150 mph speedo and I would guess that being about the same year, the Charger probably did also.

So unless he had a second speedo in the car that could register over 150 mph, how did he know it was doing 175 mph, especially if the cops backed off at 130??

Maybe he did do 175, and maybe he didn't. My money would be on the latter.:)

I've gone 140 with a Pizza Hut Delivery light-up triangle thingie strapped to the roof of a Camaro.

That thing was making some serious noise and ended up sliding back almost to the rear window (started out near the front)....but it stayed on and in one piece.

Yeah, I did several stupid things when I was younger.

I haven't seen that article yet, but I will get to it. There was a show on cable not to long ago where a professional driver and a reporter were discussing speed while driving on the Daytona Speedway. The comment was made that driving at 120 was not relatively difficult, but for every 10 miles per hour faster, the difficulty was magnified greatly. And the difference between going 180 versus 160, was enormous. Yes, it was only 20 mph faster, but it was like jumping from a Lear jet to a F14 Tomcat. Both are fast, but the F14 is blindly fast.

Everyone wants to be a Kowalski (yes, I know that was a Challenger). I don't believe word 1 about any of it though. I've pegged out my speedo in a couple cars and still had plenty of oomph, but 175 in a stock Charger and the cops letting him go? Gimme a ****in' break.

I saw 140 on the speedo in a '70 Charger RT, 440. There was some left, but I bet the actual speed was closer to 125, still too fast on a public road!!!!

    Re-read what I said,,,,It was a DAYTONA CHARGER,,,,,

You could go to your local dealer and lay down the cash and drive a DAYTONA CHARGER off the lot,,,,,believe it or not!

The cars were sold to dealer to quilify to run nascar,,,they only built enough to be called a production model,,,,same thing for the SUPER BIRD.,,,HRP

Yep, race tires, full cage, numbers and decals, all affixed to a full-fledged Chrysler Engineering test mule for NASCAR qualifying...
I'm not even a MoPar guy, I just know how to use a search engine...

Forgive me I'm old and only remember what seem to be important at the time,,,you win it wasn't a STOCK car ,,,,but it was a Daytona Charger

The speed of Buddy Baker is something that has been in the back of my mind since it was reported during the hayday of winged cars,,,,

What my point was the guy that said he did 175 is only fooling himself,,,and I still say ******** about the police letting him go!

I got out of a ticket once, told the cop I had heard my windshield wipers wouldn't work if i hit 100 mph.

He laughed and let me off with a warning.

    True story.

I like the round number he was clocked at too.. Not 174, 177 or even 171...But a nice 175.
Most of the time's i've heard of being clocked on radar, it was more like "76 in a 55" or "48 in a 35"..

I call horse **** on this said 175..
And to be let go after being cought?? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Now THATS some funny **** right there!
I think that's better than the "claimed" 175 mph..

There's no bragging right's when you drive THROUGH a car you didn't see because of that high speed killing everyone in it and yourself....and we all know that **** can happen.

Oh well.. IF he actually did it...he's one VERY LUCKY, VERY DUMB sonofa*****!

the cops let him go..Thats ****in great!! BWaahaaahahahaha

What would it take? Really big balls and no brains, even if the car was capable of it.

I remember that from way back when too. The big deal was that is was a supposedly "stock bodied" car on a closed course as opposed to an open wheel car or an LSR car.

This thread is a joke ,right?
I not only grew up in the 60's I was a service manager of a Mopar dealership in late 68, 69 ,and most of 70 . I worked on ,drove ,abused, hemi cars with unbelievable frequency. I even serviced and drove a hemi Super turd. I have owned three hemi cars and probably 15 Mopar muslecars. At the dealership I even had the job of working on the Iowa Highway Patrols mopar cop cars. They ran 118 mph with bar lights,6 mph faster without.
OK thats my credentials,A bone stock 69 Charger with a hemi would be lucky to run 140.Probably a TRUE 125 would be closer.
Hemi -Cudas did not run 12's off the showroom floor.
B motor 69 cudas did not run 140 or whatever.
Stock rod 327s do not turn 7200 rpm all day long.
Cars with street tires do not do wheelstands.
Chances are the Prom Queen was not in love with you.
You don't know where there are 57 chevy convertabiles setting on a railroad siding abandoned.
There are not any Harley Davisons setting in crates at surplus depot's for sale as s****.
There is not a new Corvette setting for sale at $1000 because some guy died in it.
Your Opel GT is not a baby Corvette.
Two weeks ago a guy told me he could take stock pistons and remachine them and get them up to 13 to 1 compression. Maybe he also drives a Chrager 175 MPH.
    Yeah thats it.

Hey, the link never got posted..... I was just beginning to enjoy the "tech junkie" posts over here - good trivia info to remember.... I could use a good laugh lookin at the **** flying over there....

My input is this, if it's stock, and the original suspension wasn't worth a **** for that speed, how is a 38 yr old suspension going to handle it? Let alone the power and steering. How many joints did he smoke to get up the balls to make a claim like this?

You guys with the limited HWY space ought to come to Colorado, through Kansas. Lots of LONG stretches. SW CO also has one state patrol per county per major hwy, that's not too many in other words......

Good read! I'm too young to know much of this (40). Thanks for the links to the Buddy Baker stuff too.

It's all good - my apologies if I mis-read, I was stuck on the "stock" part rather than the Charger Daytona piece. It wasn't stock, but it was a Daytona. I'd bet a stone stock Daytona could pull a 160, given the aero, prolly not a 175 though.

I won't touch the "old" - I think I am officially old now myself, so I'll be glad to join the club if you'll let me :)
