What would look good in the grill of the Fly?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Roothawg, Nov 15, 2003.

  1. I'm down with the plex idea... And then maybe a Moontank in front of it, ot behind it... Or maybe make a cutout in the lower area of the plex and put the Moontank in there...

OK.. so I'd, like, had few beers and stuff when I was PhotoShop'ing those last night.

My recommendation would be to definitely chop the grill shell fairly drastically. The 'maybe' fill it with a panel (aluminum, mesh, plexi, whatever...) or just leave it as-is. I don't think I'd fill the shell with something at stock height.

Just my $.02 - let us know how you decide to go.

I think it would look wierd from the side if it were chopped dramatically.

  6. the height of the grille is perfect...
and in fact with it open it looks 100% awesome.
with perspex might creep to 105% awesome, but slower due to resistance?

    hehe

I think C9 had a good idea with putting a hood on it and doing an aluminum insert leaving the sides open (still like the small moon tank)..

Man, don't let it scare ya.
This system was virtually maint. free from 1962 when it was new til the late 70's. It has been sitting dry since then.

I think that if you put something in the grill purely for cosmetic purposes, it is going to take away from the "No Nonsense Racecar" look. Wouldn't a flat piece of any material just make it even less aerodynamic? The Moon tank idea, would look good and serve a purpose. Whatever you do, I think that if it isn't functional it shouldn't be there.

Lockjaw, I would love to. Hopefully, I can get mine lined out this winter and it would make a better showing.

Deyo, I agree. I really can't figure out what I want. If I don't have a definite. I'll just leave it alone.
Although, I thought about a removeable insert for towing and shows etc.

Make a flat sheetmetal insert, easily removeable. primer it. Give it to your kids with a good selection of paint, tell them it is only going to be in when you are towing the car, see what THEY come up with.

You told me @ the drags that someone was rattling the door handle on the motorhome, scared the kids. Maybe they can paint his portrait, it could become a HAMB "wanted" poster.

You've hit the nail on the head...
Make a nice blue plexi/pinstriped no holes piece for travelling/shows..etc.

    Remove for flight...er...sorry racing.

    PURFECT.....problem...what problem?

    cheers

Hey Bell, that story has a few flaws in it. After drilling the kids on what exactly happened and who saw what...the story has a few holes in it. Maybe a little overactive imagination?

Mai, I really don't know what I'll do. We'll figure something out....

Since you asked I say just remove the shell completely and add the moon tank. Wouldn't get much more "all business" than that would it? I still love that car just as it is though.

Lockjaw you own that FED chassis too? What's up with that?
Root, I'd put a removeable sheet in there and have someone stripe you a dragonfly with the Drag-N-Fly name in it. Pop it off to race.

Hey Root, finally found the grill isert that you should put in the Drag n Fly.
I would try to come up with some kool artwork of a pissed off Dragon Fly framed with some pinstripes.

    Just my two cents.

    Happy Trails,

    Mick
