Sorry bro, that's a rat rod.

If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck...

I like the looks of it but I think it falls under the "rat" category. If you like it it does not mean two shits how it is classified. I personally like rat rods as long as they are safe to be on the road and as mentioned above a lot of them are not very structurally sound.

There is a HUGE difference between making floorboards out of street signs and getting an old taillight out of a junk yard.

so why does Kirk have such an issue with using signs for floors? Seems a lost cost way to build what I would call this...a jalopy. Perhaps Kirk is a wealthy man?

I used a street sign to repair a rusty floor pan in a 57 chevy once, but I also took all the paint off with a wire wheel and had a friend roll some beads in it.

This car was built to look ratty.

Uh, yeah. Floors out of signs, bedpans for air cleaners, welded chain bumpers, barbed wire spider webs, etc are all super traditional.

I'm specifying signs because he has signs for floors. Is a street sign cheaper than a buying a hood at the junk yard and cutting it up? Bent up license plates are better than just cutting a driveshaft tunnel out of another car? If he had any of the various other garbage welded onto his ride I'd point them out too. Why would you leave the paint on the signs unless you wanted people to see that you used garbage to build your car?

Regardless of price, hot rods are hot rods and rat rods are rat rods.

Like I said, show me vintage pictures of cars using non-car related garbage for parts.

He can build whatever the hell he wants, but he came to a board dedicated to traditional hot rods and asked for opinions. I'm sure plenty of people who aren't into traditional hot rods love it.

Lots of people were taking photos of this pile of shit...

Bring on the whining about how he's doing his own thing and did it himself. I'm sure he's a hero at Burning Man. He's a zero at a show dedicated to traditional hot rods.

  10. Go Kirk!

If anyone's worried about answers to opinion questions, they shouldn't ask them.

  11. I'd say it borders on rat, so I'd call it "Pennsylvania".

    Sorry,
    Kurt

Floor mats, not street signs. Make sure you have all info correct before opening your piehole. Safebuilt, and driven...not really what you call a "RAT". Put your trailer queen beside it and lets ride ! ! ! !

Well...I think "clean" it up a little bit. A few here and theres. And a TON of chrome, and I think you have yourself a Show Rod! So I guess I would call it an unfinished Show Rod! Maybe early sixties if you buttoned it all up right. But right now, it IS borderline Rat. Just giving my opinion, and that is all you asked for.

All this whining about money spent on cars...

This is one of my all-time favorite HAMB cars. It was built for $2500.

Budget is no excuse for building a car out of trash. Elbow grease is elbow grease. A nice, well designed car can be built in the same time it takes to build a crappy car. In the amount of time it takes to build a bumper out of piston rods and welded chain, you could research old magazines and photos and emulate what was done in the past. That is if you are going for a traditional look. If you aren't, that's fine, but you shouldn't be offended when you ask people on a traditional-based message board their opinions of a non-traditional car.

Who defined traditional ??? I'm not complaining, just thought it would be funny to get an answer. I agree, RATS are shit, if you build it like shit, but mine has way more time in it than rat state. It is a safe, fun car to drive, and it gets alot of driving. I'm sure there were a bunch of Rods built just like mine back in the day, people using what they had, and finding stuff in the junk yards.

HA HA HA!!! Oh that makes it much better.

I didn't call it unsafe. I said it wasn't a hot rod. Don't ask for opinions if you don't want them. I'll put any car I've built next to it and drive any day.

Like I already said, safe vs. unsafe is not the only criteria for a rat rod. You made a tranny tunnel out of license plates. New ones for that matter.

wow! nice ride kirk , when did you build this?

  24. I didn't notice the floors. If they're made of signs, doesn't that make them stolen parts? We had a big long thread about if it's legal to own the damned things a while back...

By the way, that garbage truck rod looks fucking goofy. It had potential to be a neat piece - think less chop, longer wheelbase, and channel the shit out of it... going by the logo in the picture, does it belong to a cartoon character?

Well, people building cars in the '30s-'60s did. I am fanatical about old magazines and hot rodding's history, and like I said, show me photos if cars from that time period who used license plates or tranny tunnels or street signs for "floor mats." I have thousands of photos from that time period and I have yet to see a car with the rat rod items I've mentioned.

I'm not even remotely suggesting that you must build a traditional hot rod to be cool or have fun or anything else, but don't ask for opinions of people who like them in a place dedicated to them and then get bent out of shape when people tell you what they think. You can build anything you want, and I'll support that all day long.

Add some fit and finish to it and I'd call it pretty damned cool. It reminds me of the 27 T with a 55 Chev deck that JD Fikes of Waco Tx built in the Early 70"s.

gotta give you credit, Kirk, you are dedicated and a student of traditional rods. You have my respect for that. I agree that Shawn asked for everybody to offer their opinion, so I guess he can't squack when they give it. I am pleased that you maintained composure and explained your position. This site has way too many holier than thou opinion givers that are just plain rude and obnoxious. While you came on strong, you justified your opinion very well. thank you for that
