You don't have to steer me, you have no idea where to go. If its a waste, get off your computer. Your one of the very ones I'm trying to help, opening your mouth about stupid crap. FNG's blasting in someones post with no clue. Read the articles and enjoy, open mouth when you have something there to offer. This one of mine may be a rat, if thats what you think, but what is your truck going to be. Never remember one looking like that back in the day.....

I generally steer clear of these types of posts, but I just had the idea that some of these cars that aren't R## R##s, Hot Rods, Street Rods, etc. may really be more related to Art Cars - you know like that wrought iron VW beetle, or the guy who grows grass or glues plastic fruit all over his ride. Regardless of whether they are safe or not, they're really not performance oriented and not refined enough to be show cars. Seems like they are built more along the lines of Assemblage Art made out of found objects whose purpose tends to be to elicit a reaction rather than contribute anything to the automotive world. I know a lot of people like to fly the whole "used what I had" flag, but it often pays off to look a little harder, do some trading, or fabricate some parts (to the best of your abilities) than to just grab something and bolt it on because it happened to be in your yard or it was free. As far as "traditional" goes, I've never seen an article or read a magazine from the '50s or '60s where the owner wanted his car to look like a roughed together weekend project or something you could buy at "Hot Topic." I always thought that some of the "traditional" cars were basic and a little unfinished due to them being daily drivers or due to lack of funds. I imagine that if you could go back in time and offer those guys some money, they would have actually finished a lot of those cars. To me the modern interpretation of this (primered or slightly rough cars) are as much a tip of the hat to the guys that built them at home out of scavenged parts as they are a reaction to high dollar billet machines that none of us could ever afford - more or less a working class Custom or Hot Rod. I'm always short on funds and time myself so my current project is basic with a spartan interior and some unfinished paint and body, but I assure you that there's no outhouse wood, steel spider webs, or road signage to found anywhere on my Merc. Rather than spend my money on fashion accessories, I spent it on stuff like disk brakes, having my gas tank relined, and other boring things like a front end rebuild. Sorry to ramble on so long, but the whole R## R## thing seems like a never ending discussion, so I propose that we refer to them as "Art Cars" or "Art Rods" rather than R## R##s. This way construction quality and performance are replaced by the ability to provoke a reaction which is what art generally does. Just in case you don't know what an "Art Car" is check out this link: www.artcars.com.

I don't want to run anyone off, especially not young guys, but when someone asks for an opinion and they get it with very specific reasoning and then get bent out of shape, that's their own doing.

You can give all the direction you want, but it has to be taken to mean anything.

You're trying to help by posting a rat rod and then arguing about it? Wow, that's some interesting logic.

Again, people have made specific call outs but you choose to ignore them in your apparent attempt to "help."

Your opinion Rat...so be it. Not trying to argue about nothing, it's an opinion, nothing to argue about. Go write a magazine or something......

THAT is quite possibly the funniest thing I have read on here in awhile!!!

Kinda like that saying about mopeds and fat chicks...

AAAAAND to Shawn : Dude, you started this thread and asked what other people thought. Don't get yer panties in a wad because you didn't get the answer you wanted. You already knew what you had. How you could you not know??? What I don't understand is : Why did you try to fish for compliments or hope for some nice soul to come along and pat you on yer pointy little head to say "It's ok"? It didn't happen and you didn't get what you hoped for. Live with it and either change the car so other people won't label it or accept the answers you received and move on. Lashing out at others for the opinions YOU ASKED FOR will only make you look bad. Lashing out at Kirk (for the opinion that YOU ASKED FOR) will only get yer feelings hurt. I know you don't like it, but he does happen to know a thing or two about hotrods and what they are or what they are trying to be. It's ummmm, kind of his job and he does happen to be very good at it.

Good luck to you. I hope you can find those people that will love yer car for what it is.

Dude, it is a rat rod, get over it.

If you like it, that is all that matters.

Bottom line, you asked and now your all mad or something.

My car gets called a street rod all the time, and ya know what...it probably is.

If it was transported back in time to 1962 people would be looking at it trying to figure out what some of the stuff on it is because lots of it was not around then.

If we take yours back in time, they would not know what to make of a lot of it.

Your car would be in Old School whatever it is mag long before it would be in The Rodders Journal. I personally feel the Rodders Journal, Hop Up, and sometimes Rod and Custom are the standards "trad" guys should be reaching for. But that too is opinion.

Old school neanderthal rust should not be a standard to be measured by.

Heck, I even like Street Rodder, but I dislike the rat rod mags and most of those types or cars.

I don't care for you car if you want me to be honest. Sorry.

Does that mean I think you suck? Not really.

As I said all that matters is that you get a charge out of driving it but you need to grab at clarity on this man.

    Embrace reality.

I don't care what anyone thinks about my car.

    I drive it, they don't.

If I posted a bunch of pics I know it would get called all sorts of things and I don't really care unless somebody wants to get personal about it.

Opinions are opinions, don't ask to be critiqued if you can't handle it.

Your trying to change the tempo of this by going off into "running the new guys off" nonsense and deflecting what is at the root of this.

I see lots of stuff on this site that is not strictly trad that I like, and sometimes cars show up on here that are time warps...I like a lot of what I see. The time warps in a perfect world would be what this site is about 24 7, but that ain't gonna happen.

Rat rod man, it's all yours.

Take it, own it, rock it.

Good luck with the tail dragger.

I can't believe you got a chromed bat wing air cleaner for $50.

Why do you have a dual quad tunnel ram with an adapter to run a single 4 barrel? Obviously it was made at some point, but that seems... odd.

Looks like a rat rod to me. If you like it, great. Drive the fuck out of it.

The "Rat Rod" term has a VERY large range. It can go any direction depending on ones opinion. The "Traditional Hot Rod" term can do exactly the same. What one would call a 'Traditional Hot Rod" is nothing more than an opinion also. Rat, Traditional, Period correct, whatever! Not one of us can really say what's right or what's wrong. Build it. Drive it. Enjoy it.

    Both have four wheels.

    Both can be steered.

Both probably go "VAROOM" really loud.

    But...

One is green and the other is rust-ish.

One has a cuddly interior it seems with plush dead animal stuff.
(Reminds me of Grand Ma's potty seat but hers was two tone...white like that one in most places but in the front kinda yellow amber-ish)

    Both probably leak oil...

So does mine on the oil thing.

I am glad I could help!

  28. Gray Baskerville has to be laughing his ass off everytime one of these debates get started...like Merc says drive it and own it and if you like it that's all that matters...every time I drive my Rivi I hear what color the other guy would have painted it and what wheels he would have run...I don't care...I had to keep me happy, my wife happy, my checkbook happy and nobody else happy...so enjoy the hell out of your rat rod and call it good...jalopy...I am sure that used to piss people off too...according to Webster's it means a ramshackle automobile

I often wonder, did he ever take one of those flip flops off and smack people with it over things like this?

    Now that guy rocked!
