Hey guys I am about to get started on my 34 chevy 5 window, the wood is gone. What would you do if it was yours, replace with a wood kit or build a steel structure. I have about 125 feet of 1 inch round steel tube that could be used. If steel is the way to go any suggestions where to start. Car is going to be an open wheel hot rod with a mild chop, undecided if I want to channel it yet. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Round steel might be a problem, harder to work with, i think. I used boxed steel tubing on a 33 master many years ago.
I have a same car with the same issue Im planning on using 1 inch square tubing but the Chev is #3 on the list.
Well I guess 1 inch square tube is what I will get. What is the best way to start. I was thinking of tack welding doors where they needed to be and start at the rockers. Any ideas or suggestions from someone that has done this is appreciated.
How floppy is the body? I did a 34 olds that had zero wood left. I had to weld the body to a table just to hold the shape. If it's still fairly straight and solid. I would put in temperary bracing to hold the shape and start replacing from there. Here's some pics how I did mine. Mat http://s234.photobucket.com/albums/ee15/thrasher34olds/
Mat that thing is bad ass, I am putting a blown bbc in my coupe also, thanks for the pics. The car you have started about the same as mine. The table idea I like. I have already picked up a polished 871 with twin 850 dp holleys, linkages and fuel line kit. Thanks again. James By the way how much is that chop?
BIG BLOCK CHEVY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thats not traditional!!!!!!!!!! Im putting one in my truck and catch all kind of hell for it too. The table idea sounds a whole lot better than rachet straps.
Thanks James, its chopped 4 inches. I've since sold the car to Don Moyer here on the HAMB. You'll probably get shit for the BBC. I know I did. But I say hell yeah. That motor is still going to find it's way into my 34 pickup. Good luck with the build and post pics. I love these Chevy's but they definetly harder to build. Here's a pic my buddy's 34 chevy. Mat
