What year and size mustang tank is this? Also where to buy sending unit and filler?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 56 ford custom, Jan 29, 2012.

  1. Well I am going to buy the filler neck and threaded cap from Tanks inc that tugmaster referred me to. Now im just trying to figure out what is the best year and size mustang tank for my 51. I want ot as flush with the floor as possible and it cant hang too low since the car sits low as it is. I also would like a good amount of gas on hand.

Go with a 65/66 tank, the top of the tank is flat and does not protrude upwards from the pinch seam. I have one in my '53. This thread has been helpful. I just bought the fill neck for mine that Tugmaster posted.

  3. Tin man and tugmaster, thank you both and everyone else that has been a help. Now the only that I need to do as of now is fibd a 65-66 tank kit with hounting hardware and fuel sender for the best price. If I gowith the fuel neck and cap that tugmaster recomended then I wont need the other neck in the kit right?

  4. The OG tank and the spare tire pocket hang to low and it will be a problem if plan on lowering the car.The Mustang 16 gallon tank is the best option for the Chevy to get good clearance. It sits flat in the trunk and fits between frame rails and you do have to cut off spare wheel opening.
On the gallon part, the late 60s Mustang have a 20 gallon and the 70s have a 22 gallon. The tank is the same on the bottom but the top is no longer flat. The top part grows for the extra gallons.

I just ordered a sender from Kentucky Mustang. $34 shipped. Should have my Shoebox running this weekend.....weather permitting.

  6. Well then I guess the 1965-67 16 gallon tank would be the best then. Those are the years for the flat tank correct? Im just still looking for the best deal local here in Ca near whittier for the tank, sender and mounting hardware. Preferably without the extra neck if I dont need it since I want the neck like tugmasters chevy and vented.

  7. On the fillerneck. I cut off the filler neck off of an old 55 ford tank. Then i drilled a hole on the side for a hose barb for a vent. Connected to a 5/16 tubing and routed it the outside. Use the 2" filler tube hose to connect to tank.

I bought a repop '70 mustang 22 gal tank for @ $100.oo for my '62 Falcon. Bolted right in. Had to change the filler neck a bit though.

  9. Frank do you mind posting a pic? Is it just like the way tugmaster did his chevy tank?

  10. Mr. Tugmaster... Is that your solenoid I see up in the right corner?? I would be concerned about fumes and the arc inside the solenoid making a large boom. I see it is vented to the outside.. But on a hot day.. Gas sloshing around.. One spark at the wrong time could screw up your day..

Anybody have dimensions on these tanks?

  14. I can try to measure the tank I have laying around when I get home.

  15. Hey tug, What type of steel tube did you get? Also did you get the 1/14, 2, or 3 inch filler neck? The cap came seperately correct?

  17. Im gonna try the mustang parts in pico rivera,ca forst. Then npd. I dont want to pay a grip in shipping. Pico is down the street for me

  18. Well the pico mustang place doesnt seem to be open. I ended up buying the 9002-1A 1965-68 mustang 16 gal tank, sender and mounting hardware for $164 shipped. Not bad at all I dont think. I bought the one with the the drain plug and its cheaper then the one without.....strange but ohwell. The tank doesnt come with the rubber hose I should have bought it. I hope the tankinc.com fuel filer neck works with this tank.

It would cost me that to get the crap out of the old tank.
