#10 heads are the ones you want. . . mine are 1956 . . . that's probavby what the first two numbers of the block number mean as well.

    Congrats you got bigger ports!

I have a reference at home I will check, I think it gives engine ID info for each year. For the later years (60's 70's) Oldsmobile ID'd their heads with numbers for the small blocks and numbers for the big blocks, maybe they were using the same scheme back in the 50's as well. I think the numbers were 5,6, and 7 with variations, the leters were B,C,D,E,J etc...

If my reference doesn't work, I can post this question on an Oldsmobile site I go to sometimes, they will be sure to know....

    thanks,

  5. mine starts with 56 aswell i also thought it meant the year but i was told otherwise. mine has the number 8 on the heads which means its a 55. unless the heads were changed of course... dont hold me to this but i THINK 10 would indicate 57,i could be wrong i tried to look up the post i made but couldnt find it. im pretty sure he said 10 was 57....if it is. anyways, good luck with that

Anton, my reference agrees with yorgatron. Your engine is '56 vintage from an 88 car

"Cast-iron overhead valve V-8 engine. bore and stroke: 3-7/8 x 3-7/16 inches. 324 cid. Hyd valve lifters. cr 9.25:1. Hp 230 @ 4400 rpm. Torque: 340 lb/ft @ 2400rpm. Rochester 2GC carb. Optional engine for the Super 88 was the same except for 240 Hp @ 440rpm. 350 lb/ft @ 2400rpm. Rochester 4GC carb. I wouldn't be afraid to guess the cam grind MIGHT have been a little more agressive.

    Hope this helps out.

No the book didn't list the deck numbers, but on the casting number on the engine the 56 indicates the year, the 7 indicates an '88 engine, the 9 would indicate a '98 engine. Sorry.

Thats odd. The casting# of my Rocket is 561747 and the deck# is R288580. According to the info I got my engine is a 303 from 1953.

Does anyone know the diameter of the camshaft journals? I think they changed it for the 1956 engines.

1954 engine ID NUMBER on deck outside of number 5 cylinder hole ...third one back from front ,drivers side is V1001 TO V355083.

    1956 engine ID is A001001 TO A385513.
If cam journal is 1.9977-1.9985 has to be a 56....don't know why
