I was given a rear end and was wondering what year it was from I was told Ford. Are parts available for them and where can I buy. Here are a few pictures showing. Thanks for the help Frenchy
It's a Dana (Spicer) 44. You might be able to figure out what year it is by removing the cover, and looking for the ring gear manufacture date which will be stamped on it. My guess is that it's from 1956 or a few years earlier. The Dana 44 is probably the rearend with the longest production run, and used in more vehicles, than any other.
Dana 44, 50's ford trucks, I have a 3.73 trac loc for it. Lots of parts available (Jeep) dang squirrel you are fast
Would this axle also been used under a 1950 or so Merc? I got a '50 Merc rearend cheap, thinking about using it in a Model A....
Those axles were in all T birds, Station Wagons, and trucks untill 1957 when the 9" came out. Plenty strong for a hot rod and often times they are the right width. Dana 44s are really common axles so parts are easy to get. Alot of them were used on 70s-80s 4x4 stuff. If you can get one with the ratio you want thats awesome because changing the gears on them requires some special tools and experiance (unlike swaping out a 3rd members in a 9").
If it's from a ford pickup, it will have 5.5" bolt pattern for the wheels, if it's from an old Ford car, it would be 4.5" bolt pattern.
go over about 8'' from where the tubes press into the housing on the passenger side, about mid way up on the tub should be a 7 digit #,,, this will help you narroe it down... you can look up the # on the dana/spicer web site......
And the IH pickup truck has the 5 on 5/12 wheel pattern with a typical 3.55:1 ratio. Looks like the Jag IRS rear cover bolt pattern is the same as Dana 44. Is this correct?
