    1964 Buick Sport Wagon

    Hello,

When my wife and I go out for errands, we usually see old trucks and some hot rods coming our way on the other side of the street. But one day, a 1964 Buick 4 door Sport Wagon was getting a make over and just revealed itself to the public. Traffic was hectic, so only one photo taken by my wife as we cruised by the location.

I was just in the drawing week of station wagons and wanted to make a Buick Sstation Wagon. But, there were only 4 door models. So, I modified a similar 65 Buick Sport Wagon into a sleeker looking Nomad style wagon. Plenty of glass so no obstruction was going to hinder the views all around, including above.

Of course the Buick Skyark Wire Wheels were a must and looked nice as a mild custom daily cruiser. It would fit nicely inside of our small two car garage and have adjustable bucket seats and A/C. Some of those GM models had bucket seats, but were only forward/backward adjustments only. No infinite back support movement like the modern Recaro style adjustments for an all around comfort feeling while on those daily trips or long distance road trips. YRMV

As depicted by the slogan, “The Emperor Wears New Clothes” or in this case, a radical modifications to a cool old cruiser… works for me.

upload_2025-2-1_3-11-35.png How random is a chopped 50 Ford cruising down a So Cal street in this day and age?

    Hello,

Prior to the start of the pandemic, I was coming home from a short shopping trip, along with getting some gas in our car. It was a great sunny So Cal day, cold, but nice to say the least. So, I was content to keep driving along. But something caught my eye. It was close to the winter holiday events and it sure seemed like people were in a rush to go somewhere. In my case, just cruising to get back home.

In one of the traffic lanes over toward the center double yellow lines, a cool old car flashed between the slight openings between the huge, white, behemoth van and other cars. It was a lowered grey/black primer old Ford sedan going in the same direction.

So, I took out my digital camera and started shooting from the shoulder, in a point and shoot estimation of where the car was and where it was going. It was a chopped, lowered, cool custom Ford that I had seen a week prior in a grocery store/restaurant complex. At the time, we were both in a rush to get to our destinations and I told myself that I would see the chopped Ford again sometime, someday.

The driving situation in coastal So Cal is full of interesting old cars. On most days on the streets, one will see a hot rod, an old truck or two. But, twice, I saw this custom Ford cruising down the road in the coastal area. As we continued our weekly coastal drives, the back of my mind was this chopped Ford Sedan.
    upload_2025-2-1_3-12-47.png
It was a cool looking sedan in the first place, but driving a chopped custom Ford sedan on the So Cal streets as a daily driver was impressive. If it was only one sighting, then sure, a custom chopped Ford sedan out to shake off some cobwebs and possibly, get some new gas.

But during those early pandemic months, we did see it again. So, it must have been a local So Cal resident. Not someone visiting a friend or two. Then my wife saw it from a distance going the other way on another local, coastal street, saying her customarily accurate description, “there is an old hot rod coming the other way, up ahead…”

It has been a long time since we had/have seen the custom chopped sedan again. Perhaps it was getting another makeover to be a daily driver again. So, did the custom chopped Ford sedan get a make over or is it still in that cool “Ice” grey tone color and still a daily driver. Perhaps, we will see it again, as we expand our weekly coastal cruises to the neighboring cities and attractions. Oceanside/Carlsbad/Encinitas to the South or up to Newport Beach/Huntington Beach coastal areas in the North are short drives.

As Laguna Beach is rolling into the late summer and early fall months and the visitors are getting fewer as the fall school months are fast approaching., the locals may come out to play… or cruise. They are now fair game for future sighting locations of old hot rods on our road trips there. Any oceanfront road trips always gives us clarity for any situation in our clogged up old brains.

    upload_2025-2-1_3-15-17.png

a radical look for a chopped 50 Ford sedan.

So, here is the latest photo that we took and enjoyed seeing the 50 Ford sedan sitting right in front of a local hot surf spot. The supercharged motor was front in center, and drew a lot of stares. It was parked in the same place as a photo from a previous post on the HAMB, a nice sedan with a local surfer putting in his surfboard in the 4 door. Could it be the same hot rod builder/custom car guy that is also a surfer? A surfer that is a hot rod builder/racer/cruiser… my, how times have just moved on to the next generation…YRMV

I’m building a 65 Corvair for my grandson. Started pulling the engine cover off to check for mouse houses. This picture is the cooling fins on one side after I took all the mouse houses off. IMG_6636.HEIC.jpeg

    Hello,

One day last week, I was driving in a coastal city industrial area looking for a supply store. Upon turning on a street within the industrial complex, they all looked the same with a warehouse style roll up door and garage lifts, etc. the front had glass windows and a parking spot. So, as I was looking for a parking spot, I came across this 1932 Ford woody wagon, sitting behind a locked gate.

It had the 32 distinct wood panels and looked lowered. So, it was already modified or that was the first step to see how it was going to look with stock wire Ford wire wheels and tires that fit nicely in the fender openings.

I had noticed as I took this fast photo, it was time to pick up my wife from a friend’s house and head on home before the traffic gets too heavy. The sun was out and it was a little cloudy, but it was before the days of heavy rain that we got recently. Lucky us, visiting prior to the bashing we all got with the rain along the coast.

If we lived in the mountains, where we liked to camp and fish for trout, it was under 6 feet of snow and the ski lifts were closed. Storms do their own things base on elevation, location and mountain influences… YRMV

Not familiar with the nice 32 5w with the 6 county 1932 Nebraska plates, however of added interest & probably true in other states, the lower numeral plates were smaller in dimension & less common, plates with additional numbers required longer plates. I have 32 county 1932 Nebraska plates on my 32 with four additional numbers requiring the longer plates. Gary at Corn Husker rod & Custom also runs 32 county plates on his 32, county population originally dictated county number such as Omaha or Douglas County was #1 (most population) & Cherry County #93 (least population.
