What'd you learn to drive in?

1942 ford jeep. Bone stock. Well outside of the dark green metal flake paint job and the green glass tiki shift knobs that were supposedly real early 60s ones. I bought it from a guy who bought it as surplus in the early 50s, he modified it back in the day and i thought it was cool, so i left it alone. Heh, i was 14 and had no qualms driving without a license. Top speed around 55 and rode like a bucking bronco. I miss that old girl.

 

56 Ford Fairlane, 292 w/overdrive. Went thru 2 sets of back tires in 8000 miles.

 

1974 Chevy Kingswood Estate wagon. My dad sad, "Learn to parallel park that fu*ker and you'll pass easy."

 

One of these a Hillman Imp, Light Alloy Coventry Climax Rear engine 875cc Screamer for it's day and quicker than a 998cc Mini! and a good match for an "S".


No power at all compared to US metal, but boy could it go round corners, ( Neg Camber front suspension kit, purchased or a 3'x2' concrete paving slab in the front boot)

 

I learnt to drive in my dads 71 ford fairlane. 351 clevo 2bbl. Was nice to drive and we still have it.

 

8N Ford tractor, probably 7 or 8 years old? Everybody pitched in come potato diggin time back home, i drove the tractor out with the barrells. I bet i was 10 when dad let me do the Mack B63 Thermodyne, it had 2 stick shift levers but he'd only let me use the one. We were lucky, we could fix up a car from Michauds' junk yard behind thier barn and we had about 100 miles of dirt road (the Reality Road - the Maine-Quebec highway) that joined our driveway and those dirt roads had no license, speed limits - nothing! and we'd get something running (them old dodge red ram hemis were good choices) and go tearassin up them roads - David drove mostly, he was a year or two older than me - i remember an old ford model a roadster pickup we got runnin and couldn't figure out how to get the brakepedal workin so we rigged another lever up behind the cab on a bit of a rollbar so you had to have 2 people to drive the damn thing! We sold it to an 'out-of-towner' for $50 and a chrysler hemi!
Those roads had logging trucks, we had to bail a couple times when coming around a corner in a 4 wheel drift and there'd be a goddamn international loaded with pulp! We'd head into the woods, trees being softer than an off-road logging truck with a bumper that you don't mess with.
Those were good days and a great way to grow up.

Thats an easy one it was the 60s

 

68 galaxie 500 with 390 and a 4bbl. learned to drive a stick in dads 73 f100 with 390 and a 3 on the tree. tires, u joints and gas never stood a chance.

1966 Chrysler Imperial Crown Coupe!! Took my drivers test with it too...If I had it now,it would be like the Black Beauty,hahaha...

 

I learned how to drive and standard transmission on a very old crank start tractor my dad had and I used to plow snow (1982ish). The first car was my dads restored 1929 Ford Model A Tudor sedan (1983ish I was 12). The car sits in his garage on jacks waiting to see the light of again.

1985 at 16 anything I coule get ahold of, eventually my '68 Firebird.
Learned stick from my girlfriend at the time in an '83 Sentra. Dad always got mad at me and couldn't teach me stick! LOL

56 Customline at the age of 14 when my grandparents gave it to me. Converted it to a Fairlane in time for college. Still have it.

1980 Corvette and 1978 AMC Concord

 

55 GMC with swapped in AMC 401 out of a 1970 LAPD Matador Police Interceptor...that my grandma bought from a LA auction in the late 70s

 

1973 (i think) VW Karmann ghia sand buggy. The front fenders were removed, doors filled in and cut out removable panels installed, rear fenders were cut "gasser style", hand brakes for turning, snorkle intake mounted by rear window, and huge sand paddles. The thing was very "different" to see but sure did cut up the dunes! At 14 years old I loved every minute of it.

 

first car that i really drove (without sitting in dad's lap) was mom's '51 chevy w/powerglide.

 

I learned to drive in a 72 datsun 1200. What I remember the most was the driving instructor who would remove his shoes once we got going and then he'd sit there for the full 45 minutes picking the callous's off of his toes and flick the bits of skin out the window. Ewww
