What'd you learn to drive in?

I got my grandpas 71 newport 4dr. 17000 orig miles, that was in 81. What a great high school car. We could fit like 10 of us in that car!

 

A two door '60 Corvair. Two speed automatic, the shifter was mounted on the dash.
My parents tried to give me this as my high school car, I said no Thanks, I'll catch a
ride, or take the school bus. It was an un-cool car to be seen in.

74 Stingray, 4 speed, worked L82 350, silver with t-tops and black guts. Was my first car, man I loved that thing.

Wait, That was my first road car. Learned to drive on an assortment of field cars, mini bikes, VW dune buggies we built, bulldozers, dump trucks etc.
All before I had my license.

 

A bunch of things but mostly my Dad's '58 Chevy Truck and a '79 VW Rabbit...

 

If you ask my sons,... they will tell you a Chariot,.... !!!




But in reality it was my Dads 1957 Ford Custom 300,.. Red & White,... gray cloth interior, 223 straight six and a ford-o-matic. looked just like the one below. But with white walls and caps. Years later My Brother and I started to install a 390/C-6,... He never finished the car, sold it to a guy in Redford, that finished it, and I think painted it green..... So if you know of a really solid 57 that meets that description in the Detroit area,... I sure would like to talk to the guy.

My brothers buddies '69 Charger. I'd steal it while they shot pool at his house. Ripping through the S turns on the Magnolia Boulevard I'd always loose a hub cap or 2. spent many hours searching for those damn things. What is it about Charger hub caps?

 

'54 Buick dynaflow, '58 Chevy powerglide, '58 Ford 3 on the tree. Yes, the last two were high school driver training cars.

A '28 Austin 7 'Chummy', (Tudor). Started out at age six, sitting on my Dads knee and steering. Hit the main seat at around seven and haven't stopped since.
Mind you, that was 1948 and the roads were a almost uninhabited, 16 miles from Melbourne, Oz.
Graduated to an early Fiat 500 after a couple of years and then an 8 hp Ford 'vert.

Ford 8N tractor at 11 and then the '37 Ford 2 door when I could get enough cushions under and behind me in the seat to reach the pedals. Farm life had some advantages.

1967 Chevy pickup straight 6 three on the tree manual everything......68 Ford Custom 500 4 door with a 390. My dad taught me how to "drive" in these not just how to make them go.... big difference.

 

1939 (I think) Farmall Model B, when I was about 10. Had to be hand cranked, but it would pop a small wheelie when I let out the clutch in 3rd. Oh, a car? My dad took our '49 Ford Tudor out on a dirt road and turned it over to me when I was 12. The next summer we took a camping trip to West Texas and he let me drive about a fourth of the way. I got my license a year later, at 14. Driver's Ed was Daddy on the dirt road.

Second car I drove, this is the one I learned to use a clutch in, although my brother and I had to put it together first. And I'm working on it again....

 

i learned in my dads 2nd car with a v8 a 64 impala jet black with a 300 hp 327 power glide when, sigh wish i still had it . my 1st car 1953 ford flattie v 8 when 16 more door

 

If you count taking a joy ride in my Dad's car with my buddy Joe Janes when we were twelve it would be a '57 Chevy Bel-Air...

If not, it might be the '56 Plymouth I bought with another guy, Chuck Akers, when I was 14. We must have put a hundred miles on that car just driving up and down the alley.

Officially it was my Dad's '65 Chevelle....

(1952 for me ... oh wait... does that make it 9n?)

1950 GMC black 5 window with a 4 spd. pu & a Ford 9N tractor. I was 6 yrs. old in 1951. The next yr. when I was 7 I drove Dads 1952 GMC 2T picking up square bales with a couple hired men stacking in the box as I drove !! Need I to say those were some of the "good ol days" ??
