...and fits in a Focus wagon? Anybody thinking of running one of these for economy? I see on a couple of threads there are plenty of performance bits available. This was advertised, but, no one seemed interested, so, I already had a boat version with a repaired block with new internals. Who knows? they sure are neat!
Mercruiser? What size? Kinda neat looking, though Kinky4 just doesn't have the same ring to it. Later, Kinky6
Lance Sorchik did a big post about them, and the industrial version parts availability, maybe a month ago. I think they are pretty cool and have some good potential. There was a special head available on the Chevy II-based Mercruiser, and a 181ci. version. For economy I'd think about adapting a TBI from a GM or maybe twin SU carbs.
I doubt it's an iron duke, looks like the 1960s engine, not the late 70s engine...it's made to fit the early Nova, not the Monza. note the front sump as far as I know the iron duke name was originated in the 70s to overcome people's fear of the aluminum lump that was used in the early vegas
I think there cool and If I had one Id run one ,You can only drive the speed limit anyway ,The only one I had was from a boat and block was cracked ,I only have chevy v8 small blocks ,Still wish I had my poncho blocks and olds ,I didnt think they would get hard to find for cheap
Those seem to be as rare as rooster teeth around here when a guy is out looking for one. They put 181's in a lot of Hyster forklifts though.
I like mine, can hook up to just about any GM trans. I am running a T5 with Limeworks converted shifter and ebrake handle.

I had one in a 62 Chevy II and loved it, also had a boat with one but didn't keep it long. I was at a farm auction a couple months ago and there was one, looked like it came from a swather or combine because it had a governor and an in/out clutch with belt pulley drive. I didn't stick around for it to sell. IIRC, the iron duke name always refers to the later 2.5.
I think you are right. The Ironduke was in the Monza and Sunbirds and I think a few made their way in some early 80s Camaros.I've never seen any in the Olds (Starfire)or Buick(Skyhawk) versions. The later models had cross flow heads.S-10s and Jeeps also had them.
You're right about the terminology but I think the block is very similar if not the same. The Iron Duke had a cross flow head if I recall but that may have only been the boat engine. Someone else knows for sure on that one.
It seems I stand corrected! The engine is the 151 inch Poncho. The Pontiac versions block derived from the Chevy stovebolt. It is not the aluminum Vega engine. Always lots to learn here!
My 85 S10 151 has a cross flow head on it. Roller cammed, and a single TBI unit. And a computer controled distributor, but I am told that the earlier HEI versions will fit it. Also the bellhousing will not bolt up to a "regular" Chevy Transmission. Metric? I checked with several transmission shops about swapping out the tranny for a TH350, and all of them said it won't fit. However I did notice Speedway now sells an adaptor to do it.
151 poncho is half a 302 ....153 is 2/3 of a stove both have plenty of speed stuff for the average guy...super duty and merc respectivly when they went metric with the iron duke the bell changed?. my early 80s has a typical sbc pattern and came with t350.
What's a 100 bucks.... ...and fits in a Focus wagon? Im not sure but I do know she stands on the corner of an evening............... .
