I would like to suggest two:

    1. "The Kings of the Road", Ken W. Purdy

Written in the 50's, it's now out of print but a great read if you can locate one. May be some copies available through www.alibris.com - a good site for out-of-print books.

    2. "Racing In The Rain", John Horsman (John Bull Publishing)

John is a friend and the engineer who ran the LeMans-winning British Ford GT40 team for John Wyer. He also solved an at-speed lift problem on the early Porsche 917 with aluminum sheet, pop rivets and duct tape! Sound familiar? Good read but written by an engineer so excrutiating detail.

Would also suggest "Hot Rod" by Henry Gregor Felsen.

I picked up Thom Taylor's 2006 release "Hot Rod & Custom Chronicle", a little big for the beach, but an awesome read with great old pictures. Also "Classic Customs and Lead Sleds" written by Bo Bertilsson (2001) is chock full of HAMB friendly cars, past and present.

I'd sure like to know what Barnes and Noble has any Felson books!

    Unfair Advantage by Donahue
Any Don Montegomery books, but I doubt the store would have one
They usually have one of those Encyclopedia of American Cars there, fun to look through and a decent reference for later.

There is a new book out called "Go Like Hell" I would strongly reccomend. It is about Ford racing during the 1960's. Tells the story about Carol Shelby & many others. One of the best books I've read in a long time. It is written by the editor of "Playboy" so he knows what Guys like... A.J. Baime is the author's name.

Another good one is "Edsel". It's about Henry Ford's son Edsel. Henry always got all the credit even though Edsel had greater impact on vehicle design. Especially the Fords we Hot Rodders all covet. Fascinating read and it gives long over due credit to a true automotive genius.

I just finished "Fordlandia". It is a historical book chronicalling Henry Ford's venture into a rubber plantation in South America in the '20's-40's. It was good and informative.

Man, I can't believe nobody has suggested "Bangin' Gears and Bustin' Heads". It was practically written right here on the HAMB several years ago. 40StudeDude used to post a story every Friday Night called the Friday Night Read. Stories about him growing up as a hot rodder in the early 60's. He turned that into a book deal and now has "Bangin' Gears" and a few other books in a similar vein.

    By Tom Cotter.
These books suffer from poor editing and proofreading, and not all the cars are barn finds, but they are good reads.

Are you interested in a work of fiction, as opposed to a "car book"? I really enjoyed "The Art of Racing in the Rain", by Garth Stein. A really good story. Told from the perspective of man's best friend. Very unique.
