What's a real steel body go for these days?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Fordor Ron, Feb 15, 2009.

  1. I know it's crazy money but I'm just curious. Let's say a rusted or crushed creek bed find 32-34. How much? What about a fresh barn find off the chassis? I'm talkin' just the body. Any pic's of some and their transformations? Anyone have anything for sale coming up?

    Thanks in advance,

    -Ron

I had a guy ask me 500 dollars for what was left of a '26 T touring on which only the dash and part of the cowl was still even remotely repairable with major rot at the bottom. All the good barn finds are in the hands of hoarders here and not for sale at any price.......hence my T being a Spirit glass body. I would have prefered steel but you do what u gotta do.

Only answer I'd have for you is the classic, "If you gotta ask you probably can't afford one." :(:)

  9. Yeah, I probably should have clarified. Henry steel is what I'm talkin' about. But, Chevy's would be interesting as well. Just has to be real.

I gave $1800 for my '31 Chevy coupe a couple years ago. Very minor rust in rear quarters and doors. No wood left in it. Good stock chassis without motor or trans. I thought it was a very good deal.

In Colorado (yesterday on ebay) a '31 Chivvy Pickup cab with doors went for $595 Buy It Now, was only on auction for 3 days. Seller listed it too low in my opinion, I was going to buy it, and put it off for one too many days...................................

roadster, 3window, 5 window, tudor, fordor, sedan delivery, pheaton, vicky, roadster pickup, pickup, woody....??????????

you need to be a little more specific, i know of a 32 tudor body that i wouldn't give $500 for, but i also know of a 32 3w body that recently sold for $30,000.

  14. Coupe's primarily. I know it's stupid money but how stupid are we talkin'? I know there was a guy on here who dug a 33 or 34 coupe out of a creek or something, beat it all out and sold it awhile back. Wonder what it went for? That was a great thread. I wish I could find it.

Friend of mine paid about $6500 for a very rusty Henry '32 5 window and drove 1500 miles round trip to pick it up. Lower 6 inches looked like cheese cloth but it still had the firewall and doors, he was pretty stoked that the rain gutters were intact. It looked like it had been cut out of a hedge row and was all twisted out of shape. He's got it looking pretty good now but still has a LONG way to go. It had been a rod once upon a time because it had a filled top that had been leaded in.

  21. Usually too damn much! It's OK if ya have really deep pockets I suppose. But how many rodders do? Who knows? "As time goes by" (So sang Sam in Casablanca) the things will only get more pricey. So bless the people who make glass bodies! Keeping things a little more affordable for the rest of us............................

Value , in this case, is inversely proportional to condition it seems..

What i mean is someone will dig a battered 32 3W coupe out of a ravine, take it to a big swap meet, and ask 8,000 for it, but the amount of work needed to get it to the same condition as the 25,000 one (that only needs a weeks work to be ready for paint) is something in the order of 25,000!!

The only bargains in old tin are the unseen and undercharged hours of others. pay more, outlay less.

  24. That's a good point. Obiviously a creek bed find would be less than a fairly straight one. Let's say one that needs patch panels but is more or less complete, all the way to one that is solid but still needs some time spent on it before paint.

I just thought that there would be some guys braggin' about they're barn finds or some guys who beat out some rough stuff out and sold it off for a profit. I'm suprised no one has a posted a story like that yet...

I have two 32 5wnds, I just got them both this last fall.
I traded 20,000$ worth of stuff for the good chopped body and I paid 3200$ for the really rough not chopped body.
Just shows you, you can pay almost nothing for junk and big bucks for the good stuff.
    PS: this is Canadian funds.

  26. This is what I'm talkin' about. How about some more of these story's...

  27. Saw an old hot rod '32 body, little rot in the bottom of the cowl, no frame or floors or anything, but it had glass and a dash in it - sold for $12,500 in about 2 hours at a small local car show. Saw a really nice one in the classified here for $20,000 (or was it 25?) FIRM a while back.

  28. It was 20 grand FIRM and it's going to Norway:) HRP

I got a '32 5w all steel, no rust, 283 270 hp dual quad ( 200 miles on new engine), 4spd., '55 chevy rear, dropped axle, complete with 4 unrusted perfect fenders, cherry hood, grille, insert and 8 curved glass SW gauges mounted in a perfect steel dash, full set of perfect garnish mouldings and a pickup full of spare parts for $3,000. The guy wouldn't sell me just the body, said I take it all or nothing. So................. I loaded it up and am deciding what I'm going to keep and what I'm going to sell. I might just use everything and build it but having my heart set on a rat rod I'm hoping I won't get laughed at for building a gold chainer ride.
