Have used a bunch of these PerTronix Plug N Play Dist. Very happy with them. Putting another in a friend's 40 next week. Self contained, no external box, right cap in black. Perfect! http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=PNX%2DD100700&N=700+313871+4294908216+4294840140+4294881253+4294881246+4294817870+115&autoview=sku

POST HAS ME HOOKED?? Gotta ask what wrong with your current unit ? Or did ya just need to speend some money? A aftermarket distributor could be good or could be bad. My bet would be on a stock style with a proper curve adjustment and get on down the road.........
You might want to check this out: www.performancedistributors.com they make a high quality unit you need to furnish your engines specs to them and they will blueprint and curve it for you, different color caps are available also.
I have an MSD StreetFire in my 290 HP 350 sbc crate engine and the module died after about 1,000 miles. I put in a stock one and it's been running fine ever since. However, it looks and feels cheap, and it did fail.
I had a bright red MSD cap on an MSD dizzy on a SBC. I just cleaned the cap REALLY well with some simple green, taped off the top 1/4" of each splug wire terminal, and sprayed it with duplicolor hi-temp engine paint. It looked great for four years, then I sold the car.
If you go with a Unilite make sure you get the matching coil and the power filter, they are a must when using that distributor. You need all of them to have it work right.
I think I am leaning toward msd or pertronix since accel and mallory are both owned by mr gasket---had some bad experience with mr gasket stuff--used to be good, but not so good now. The pertronix is a lot less $$ than msd--anyone ever had a problem with them,I know they been around for a long time
Get a stock points distributor, send it to GMC Bubba and have him put his new HEI system inside the old points cap. It has to be the best looking most bullet proof set ups I have seen in a while. Dont get so hung up on "I had trouble with that guys stuff, and I will never use it agian" mentality. Hell I had a bad experience after eating white castles but I still go back. You are running a SBC just like me, we have all seen them blown up, but we still run them!
OK,I have decided to go with pertronix, for one thing they been around for a long time and as far as I know they haven't been bought out by the commies or any big conglomerate.and I can get black,or red cap with male or female terminals. I have one more question, with an oil-filled coil,is there any advantage to mounting it vertically,or can U mount it horizontally? Now I know some of U guys think I'm stupid, but I'm old and retired. When I was young I had plenty of hotrods--36 ford coupe flattie ,2 duces ,HC heads 50 ford convert leadsled 53 merc 2 dr ht with the biggest rake you ever saw 40 ford coupe with nailhead,3 duces and W&H dual coil dist (whens last time U saw one of those? 39 ford coupe with chev 348 3 duces& cam THEN I met what is my wife now and she hated hotrods (real bummer) So I sold the 36,the 39,and the v40,(had them all at same time) and bought a brand new 60 chev convert 283 ,3 on the tree, well she didn't know it but before long it had a duntov cam, solids, and AFB with alluminum intake. Then a muncie 4 spd---I went to pick her up one nite and she said what happeded to the other gearshift--I told her it broke and the cheapest one I could find was the kind that went on the floor Ha Ha Then many years past and when I retired I told her I wanted another hotrod and thats when I got the T went with sbc because of availability of parts---its NOT a crate motor Just an overhauled one from a 92 pickup. Don't mean to bore anyone, just wanted to give an idea of who I am would love to send pics of the old cars, but lost a box one time when moving and all photo albums lost Gary
You are right. PerTronix is privately owned , By Americans! The basic oil filled coil doesn't care about position.
Leave it the way it comes from them. Drive it and see how it feels. I think they set them up for a good healthy street motor form the box.
OK,thanks I want 36-38 all in around 2500-3000. Didn't know how they are set, thought if not set in the "ballpark" That maybe I'd change something before I put it in, but maybe I don't have to
