Whats it all about for you?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 4eva4banger, Jan 20, 2004.

  1. It's completely about the way I felt handing tools to my dad when I was a kid. He's gone but the feeling is still there.

best feeling in the world is accomplishment.

overcoming big and small obsticles, learning new things... and making something from absolutely nothing with your own 2 hands. when the work is appreciated by your peers, that is what accomplishment is to me.

I've got to agree with all the people saying driving the car you built. I know that after working on my 54 chevy fro three years, the first time I drove it was one of the best feelings ever! Just to know that you and your friends sweated and bled to get something cool accomplished was enough. I know others feel that way too. I was there the first time fatassbuick drove his 31, and he was literally shaking!

Rat Rodder, that's so cool that you've got a pop who's a hot rodder. Even though you were young this obviously left an impact on you.

I gotta say that it's not always about driving a car you built.
My first ride in a real Hot Rod was when I was 16 years in England. It was as thrilling as anything I've ever experienced, it's almost impossible to put into words the impact it had on me.

Nads, brother, it seems you are setting a double standard for yourself. First you criticize for imagining about hot rods, driving your dream rod etc. then rave about it in the next sentance. I cannot tell you how many years I spent dreaming, drawing, begging rides and hanging around shops before I could afford to build something of my own. Yes getting there and driving it is the goal! But it takes a long time, and fantasizing is part of getting there. That said, who says dumb shit like

"To scare little kids, when they walk down the road. Reving the engine, then slamming the gas and scretching the tires all the way down the road.."

I think it's about a lot of things. Maybe nobody knows what, maybe nobody knows why. All I know is when I sit down behind the wheel of my Chevy, there's no feeling like it.

  7. Quit trying to fool yourselves.

    It's about adrenaline and pussy.

You know, that feeling you get when you've gotten into the loud pedal just a little too far and stuff starts to get loose out back, but somehow you manage to save it? That's what I'm talkin' about.

And as far as the pussy goes: Bad girls like bad cars.

  8. It's a lotta things but some of them are:
Blasting across I-80 in mid summer, driving your gray primered delivery and remembering it as a parts car for a better one. It's taking satisfaction in knowing damn near every part it took to adapt that 406 smallblock [the one you built yourself in your home garage], you made yourself and it all works together!
It's cruising home from "the salt" in the same sedan delivery across Montana and being passed at about 85 by 3 girls in a Toyota Forunner. It's the feeling you get passing them back...doin about 130 and not really straining the car.
It's spending time with your son and/or your little brother, building hot rods in the garage and talkin shit.....I don't have words for that feeling...it's just a "good" feeling.
It's getting together with friends of all ages at a Christmas party in Minnesota or renewing friendships at the HAMB drags in Missouri and having one thing in common...love of old hot rods and customs.
Then, it's that little itchy feeling you get in the pit of your stomach when you pull up beside someone at the stop light and they stare with their mouth hanging open..stare until you go on green... You've blown their mind a little.
Most of all it's the resonance set up by both 4 barrels, wide open at 6 grand just before you pull the lever back into 2nd gear on a warm summer night...........

cheaterSLICK, alone with my thoughts and daydreams in a car I built myself, but rarely are these thoughts car related. They're usually of a far more esoteric nature, their just blobs of scattered bits of info flying around. It's a sense of being lost.
It doesn't make a lot of sense.

mytolo, might have been about pussy when we were teens, but pussy can be had without a car... theres something to be said about man and obnoxious pieces of machinery, our gender tinkers, its in our nature to be curious... hotrods are a direct result of that. so, i dont think it has much to do with the ASS and looking cool... how many times have you looked cool on the side of the road with a busted jalopy? Nads last night I had a dream I was swimming in my car, and only had about 6 inches of air to breath inside...yikes.

  14. Part of it's rolling down the coast highway in a roadster on a warm summer night and seeing the girl in the HELMET on the Hog wising she was riding with you with her hair blowing in the wind. Another one is seeing your nieghbors come out from the porches to see what you just fired up in your driveway. They're not sure what to make of a bunch of guys high fiving and laughing just because it caught on the first try. It's a refridg in the garage with speed shop decals on it and brews for friends inside. It's Jimmy Reed & Howlin' Wolf on the stereo and rumbling 32" glasspacks shifting 4 times with a slant pan. It's an Olds Kettering V8 with finned, polished valve covers and valley cover. It's about partying with the Vipers at the 'Patch in Bakersfield.

And it's sure ain't about trophys and sitting in a billet lawn chair behind your car for 3 or 4 hours.

I won't even get started about why I like Nitromethane…

    Nads..esoteric is off topic [IMG]

its about those that don't get it.

its about the "inlaws" worrying about my old "unreliable" cars, that never leave me stranded, then them giving me their blowed up late model, cause it let them down halfway across the country..."well at least you will have a reliable vehicle now" ha ha, ok. its about them being pissed when i sell that late model for easy money, to buy parts for unreliable old cars. well not really that last one, its just a bonus!

its about the solo trip. any time. any place.

its about getting out to the places where nobody bothers to go.

its about children, locked up in boring civilian cages, captivated by the weird guy in the weird old car. their eyes glued to the window, with silly grins, or blank stares of awe as they suddenly realize what cool is.

its about annoying the blissfully ignorant guy in the expensive european car.

its about cops letting you off, because you have a cool car, after pulling you over for the same reason.

its about being able to perform roadside fixes with a coat hanger and duct tape.

and parts that cost 29.99, not 299.99

its the look from the old guys.

its about being too fast, too slow, too high, too low. too ratty, too shiny. unpractical, or too unsafe.

its about doing it better. a faster hot rod. a more capable 4x4. a lower lowrider. the slickest custom, or the lamest looking sleeper.

its about doing it your damn self. all of it.

its the saturday morning at the swap meet.

or the afternoon in the junkyard.

    the smells.

    the history. the future.

its the only way you know.

its about going to the place where the ol lady leaves you alone.

its about not having to mutter to yourself "righty tighty, lefty loosey"

its about getting good deals on parts, because the seller knows its going to a worthy home. and vice versa.

its about primer, cause you're doing bodywork. not over cherry stock paint, just to be cool.

its the perfectly understated car, and the most far out, unroadworthy trailer queen.

    its about good taste.

thats nuff for now. plus what everybody else said.

largely it's about bulding something with my own hands and help from many friends...

It's about sitting on a stack of 2X4 to figure out where the seat and wwheel will go...

It's about hang out with friend who like this stuff the way I do or more (freaks)...

It's about learning something new and old at the same time and getting to drive it every chance you get.
