Time to be cleanin' the garage in prep for my next project, and just wondering what I should be askin' for some of this stuff: Have a 350 horse 327 & 4 speed out of a '64 Vette. Engine's partially disassembled, but all there. Also have an Offy dual quad intake & B&M aluminum bellhousing for this setup. What should I be lookin' for $$ wise? How about a 389 out of a '63 Bonneville? Any input appreciated! Thanks!!

Man, every SBC and 4speed came out of a Corvette of some kind, didn't it?
Check the numbers and find out if it is a true 'Vette engine and correct trans and you could probably name your own ticket.

  3. Always wondered how every single Chevy out there has a 'Vette engine,

Must mean that the Corvettes were pieces of shit and the only thing remaining to salvage was the engines. Hence, the proliferation of "'Vette engines".

DEFINITELY run the numbers on the block and see what you really have! As PHR said, if it's real, you can damn near name your price to the right buyer.

HEADS: GM 4 in center, 3782461 (6 may be a G, hard to tell) J 304 there's also a 13 cast by one of the bolt holes
BLOCK: #s are off the pads by the water pump outlet on front of block: 5193343 on one pad FIII 3HH on the other
4 speed: has a couple different 3s on it. on the right side of the case it says GENERAL MOTORS CORP. 3857584 GM on the tailshaft by the speedo drive it says 3851325 on the removable plate by the linkage on the left, it says 3831707 and stamped on the case where the gear box meets the tailshaft, it says PO 11 04

Also, have the original Vette finned valve covers (not too great though) and the air cleaner, distributor, etc. No carbs though.

Any ideas on what an Offy dual quad intake goes for? I'm guessing the B&M aluminum bellhousing is pretty common fare? 389 pretty much worthless?
Hope this helps you out - Thanks guys!! Let me know if you need any more info!

No date codes or markings on the sides of the block. By the oil filter boss, there's a 312 and under that a 66 N By the fuel pump boss, there's just a number 4. Sorry to seem so stupid on this, I'm not really a GM guy, I inherited these blocks when we cleaned out my grandfather's garage (he ran a gas station) and I assumed with all the Vette stuff, the motor was from my uncle's '64 Vette that he totaled. the block's not Chevy orange, it's kind of a green/gold - could it be a replacement warranty block or something?

Ok, I found the block numbers, didn't see them the first time around, as they were caked with grease. Also solved the mystery on the green/gold color - apparently, my uncle painted the motor that color to give his 'Vette that "Kustom" look (I saw the Chevy orange peeking through in those "hard to get" places)
Anyway, the block numbers are: Left side: GM 378287 Right side: 1244
The clock-like thing has the arrow pointing about 11:00

So gang, what does this all mean? Thanks!

  11. Pretty simple and smart of GM. They used the 327 in many cars starting in 1963 and the block casting number are mostly "standard" for most models. Therefore, you can have the same block number stamped on a Impala, Camaro, Chevelle as the Corvette.

What set the Corvette engine apart were Manifold, Heads, Cam, Intake and Carb.
