In reference to using Gibbs on the bare metal,

I was wondering if I was the only one who caught that.

That is absolute living proof that advice you receive on the internet is NOT always good advice. I can only imagine how nicely the paint or primer will bond after soaking bare metal with an oily product of any sort....

PPG DP series epoxy primers on my stuff. The only drawback I've found is that you can't go straight over it with high-build 2K type primer after it's sat a while without first re-coating with another coat of DP series epoxy. If I'm doing something that will sit a while I usually try to apply a good coat of DP epoxy (in whatever color) and then apply two good coats of high build 2K primer. That way, even if it sits a year or more, all I have to do is clean it off with wax & grease remover (or lacquer thinner) and start block sanding.

Not from the Internet, right off the manufacturers can. Obviously I would prep surface before paint but there are not the usual problems with lubricants such as WD-40 and the like. Have not had any fish eyes painting over this product.

  3. Don't let you imagination lead you to the wrong conclusion.
Easily done by not doing due diligence.

I have done it as have many thousands of others.

All you doubters out there .. Your choice aye.

It even says it on their website.
If it weren't true would they still survive?

YOU CAN PAINT RIGHT OVER IT

is the only product of its kind that undercoats metal and can be painted over

    http://www.getgibbs.com/about-us/

It’s the only penetrating oil that can be painted over after being applied to metal,

Of course "common sense" will tell you that no matter what paint you put on a car, you need to wipe it down with a cleansing agent recommended by the paint manufacturer.
Whether you use Gibbs or any other product.
Remember though ... "common sense'' is not so common.

  4. Not doubting the Gibbs promise. They seem to have very good rep. I would like to hear from someone who has painted over it successfully.

I just used some SPI epoxy and it is some of the best I have ever shot, it will cover sand marks and small flaws and it is inexpensive and they have great customer service too.

Any one who says epoxy gets an A for the day epoxy is hands down the best thing you can put on bare metal if you want to protect it and still do body work/painting etc. ospho and other products work very well to but they are not as user friendly to paint products. never use a cheap filler primer because they ARE porus and will wick moisture, they look good on top while rust eats away underneath it, if you choose to use epoxy sandblasting is best d/a with 80 grit would be next GOOD LUCK

  7. done restoration for yrs....epoxy is best answer....can do filler work over top...metal is always protected....epoxy it...scuff later if doing bodywork..simple..permanent...
