Technical What's the consensus on good power window stuff?

What's the consensus on who makes good and reliable power window conversion components?

I am finding the web awash with either unbranded stuff, from unknown origin, or just Hoffman Group en***y ****.

And no, I don't need a ration of **** for wanting power windows. Yes, the car has good working AC.

I like cruising with the windows down close to home; however, I live in a region that has a 50º temperature range in the Summer. It can be 58º when I leave the house, and 108º when I get inland.

Getting off of the freeway and stopping, so I can roll my windows up is not something that I want to keep doing.

I got mine for my PU from Julianos. They were easy to install and they fit the door with minor modifications.

Ha! The seatbelts in the car came from them! So did the 3rd brake light in my OT shop truck!

Thanks! It's hard to tell what's good, until someone got burned, and then told the tale.

I don't like that it's happens to folks regularly, and I don't want to be that guy, either!

I’ve got a Specialty kit in a car a couple years off topic. Convertible, windows used a fair amount. Been in 20+ years, no problem. Not as fast as modern windows.

I buy seat belts from them all the time and I bought my banjo wheel in my roadster from them (very high quality, made in USA), they even hydro dipped it for me in a nice walnut finish and did my shift knob to match.

I have never had an issue with them or their products. Not cheap but quality typically comes at a price.

I put a kit in my nephews 58 Apache. The folks were out of NC. It was a bolt in. Easy Peasy. Everything worked as advertised.

I installed them in a friends 1940 convertible and to be honest, they didn't work as well as they should for the cost.

We ended up pulling them out and reworking them to get them to work properly. HRP

I've been happy with the Specialty Power Windows in my rod.

Mine worked fine as well. Easy to install. Weld in the supplied brackets and go.

I like arm strong power . No wires going from fuse panel through door . One less potential problem.:)

Oh, you have been paying attention! I forgot about that cowl vent motor I was forced to use due to my AC and the Newport wipers. I also use their seat belt retractors to keep the lap belts tidy.

On the PU I used black braided steel (black truck, not too noticeable) jamb looms to run the door wires (windows, speakers...) and I made a ball check that attaches to the braded harness inside the kick panel area that doubles as a door stop to prevent the doors from opening too far. Not an alteration you would want to do to a painted door.

I bought mine off of eBay, they look just like some that Speedway sells. Not super fast, but they do work smoothly. Whatever brand you get just make sure they are mounted solid. One of the mount bolts fell out of mine, must not have gotten it tight, and it let the window rock in the door when it was down, and it cracked when I shut the door. That was on me, not the unit. The units have worked flawless the 4-5 years they have been in.

Question on these aftermarket power windows, what limits the up/down travel?
    Always wondered that.

I will pay for quality. Once I go through the doors, I don't want to do it again.

  23. They seem to have the same reputation as Newport engineering (wiper motors). Direct-fit parts and I haven't heard anything bad about them. Just a small company quietly making a quality product...

No need to spend a bundle for someones kit. For 25 yrs my set-up has worked perfectly. Using all the O.E. arms and bracketry weld a mount to hold a Ford P.W. motor so that the gear lines up with that of the window mechanism. The gears match perfectly. Just go to a jumk yard and find an 80's Ford with P.W. and pull the motors or look on the net for new/rebuilt motors. I'm not sure anymore when the gears changed but I think in the late 80's early 90's

For my 49 Buick I used the power window motors and gear from a 70 Cadillac. Removed the spring on the stock manual winder and ran a link from the big gear on the Cad ***embly to the big gear on the Buick ***embly. It was cheap and easy to mount and works great.

Nu-relics best you can get. They are up there with Newport and their wiper systems

I've had both Specialty and Nu-Relics, the specialty works by a center push track. If not in the center properly the window is a little slow and angled going up and down. The nu-relics uses a scissors style like original equipment and seemed to work smoother. Have had no problem with either one other than one of the Nu-relic acted up and they replaced it very promptly.

SPW and Nu-Relics here. Depends on which style you want. Nu-Relics has scissor style for just about anything.
