What's the coolest thing you found in an old car?

  1. So, where did you get laid the first time? Church? This is just a fact of life, girls like sex too and they have to start sometime somewhere.

My unibody I found a nice claw hammer wedged in between the radiator support and grille. Made a lot of sense about the quality of repairs.
Pulled the cardboard headliner out of it to put a new one in, found 3 nice big wasp nests. Amazed Id never gotten stung.
Never gotten lucky with any money or cool parts in one.

  3. Well hell, a lot us have pleasant memories associated with our first time in the back (or front) of a car. When I was 17 I did find a 16 year old in my car, or rather we found each other. I'm pretty sure she is much older than that now, because I know I am. ;) Just in case, I won't name any names. Hopefully it's a pleasant memory for her too.

There are a couple of other threads here that give accounts of elderly ladies reminiscing on the experiences they had in one model car or another (In fact I just read a post this morning that mentioned a '41 Studebaker). Good for them! It gives you something nice to think back on when you're old. I'm sorry if you missed out on having a similar experience. It really was traditional.

  5. When my grand mother in law saw my 53 pick up. she got all excited and wanted to go sit in it. I was blown away. It was not even running at the time. I opened the passenger door for her and she slid over to the center seat and was waiting for me when I walked around. We must have sat there side by side for 40 min talking about her going out on dates and one boy having a truck just like mine. For the most part she was grouchy but you should have seen her light up that day. She and I became great friends before she passed. She was one of those 16 years old that was found in the front seat, and let me tell you that old bird must have had some great memories of those days.

No to your question. Other than that, I don't disagree with anything you wrote. We're taking about two different things.

You guys are missing my point.

  7. One of the coolest things I found in an old car was when I found a 1968 (sorry for the newness) Dodge Dart with a "340 FOUR BARREL" hood on it. I looked under the hood and there was a 383 in it. The owner said he was going to remove the 383 and put an "original" 340 back in it. As I looked at the VIN, I noticed that it was an original 383 car with a 1969 340 hood on it and offered to buy it. I did not tell the guy he was wrong about the engine. I bought it and when i got it home, I discovered it was the original engine and I had just purchased a 1 of 92 built 383 four barrel, four speed Dart GTS! Dart3.JPG

A 1912 penny and a small, curved open end wrench in the door of my (now sold) 1933 Chevy Master sedan.

I've got another bent wrench story. This one came out of a 48 IHC pickup I bought at a farm auction. Finding a twisted wrench in a farm truck isn't rare, but when I went looking for a manufacturer all I could find was "Made in Canada" with the old Queen of England stamp on it, so it likely predates 1967. Some of the Gray wrenches looked very similar so it could be one of them. It is bent, but was also very short for a 7/8" wrench. The box end at the opposite end is also a 25/32 which I found very odd. It had been ground on at one end so I cleaned it up a bit on the grinder. World's biggest ignition wrench?? 013.JPG

  10. I thought it was time to bring this thread back into the light in case someone has something to add. I don't know why exactly but I love hearing about some of the cool crap found in these old time machines.

  11. A Charger parts car I bought and pulled out from its resting place in a back yard had some suprises. When I got it home I found an E body 4 speed trans on the floor of the back seat with all the rods. It was covered with some rags. There was also a nice pistol grip shifter under the seat.

I was out in NV by Nellis AFB, helping a buddy with his daily driver, a 1966 Pont. SW. Since the car came from the Northeast the spare tire well was rusted out. He wanted to go to a junk yard and cut another one out, I on the other hand wanted to make one and just weld it in place. We argue over it for about a hour at Burger King. He won and we headed out to the junk yard. All of the cars were stacked on top of one another, with a 66 Pont SW sitting in the middle of a stack. I was surprise that the owner or the guy working there, let us cut one out. We were not allow to use any type of flame cutting device, we had to use a wood chisel to cut the part out, so you know we in for a long process. The good thing was that we did not have to snake under the car, the spare tire well was about shoulder high. We were hammering away, making slow progress, when the junk yard guy came over and asked it we took the spare tire out, we said we had not, but were just in the process of doing it (joke joke). Well he would not leave until one of us climb up into the back of the car and pulled it out for him. I guess he was thinking that the spare tire, unless the car had a flat at one time, would be like new (another joke joke). So I climb up into the rear of the station wagon, pulled off the spare tire cover (located on the right side of the car, by the rear seat, did not find a spare tire, but did find a Rochester fuel injection unit, complete, but missing the spacer that goes between the distributer and intake flange. Told my buddy what I found and wonder what it was going to cost me. Got to the office, and place the spare tire well, as well as the fuel injection unit, on the counter and said how much. The guy said, together or separate, I said separate. The junk yard men turn around and look at a chart on the wall, listing parts and prices. Listed on the wall, INTAKE MANIFOLD WITH CARB----35.00, DISTRIBUTER----10.00, SHEET METAL, UNDER 3 FEET----5.00.

love this thread! I haven't found anything worth a damn in any of the cars I've bought over the years. Sounds like I need to be going to police auctions.

  14. When I brought my 39 home last spring I asked the guy I bought it from if he had the keys by any chance. Said "nope no keys" no big deal got it home and started v leaning put the inside. Took the front seat out, under the front seat half glued to the carpet was the factory keys!!! Pulled up the rotted old carpet and found 5 old Nazi coins!!! Car had belonged to military men from New till the guy I bought it from. Im fourth owner.

I bought a '70 Cadillac convertible in 1997 and a couple of months later I was cleaning out the trunk and under the carpet I found some coupons in an envelope along with a hundred dollar bill and two twenties-all from the '70s. I guess a previous owner had stashed the money under there to spend with the coupons but I'll obviously never know....

Bought a '66 Satellite with no keys and a closed trunk. Opened it up when I got it home and it was full of Henry J parts!

I bought a 66 Mercury Comet 2 door at a tow yard auction for $225. While cleaning out the trunk wedged between the trunk mat and tail panel I found a 35 mm film canister. Inside a 22kt gold band ring. Sold it for $300.

Bought a 69 Roadrunner...when I got home, used a screwdriver to open the trunk and found a complete 440 Sixpack manifold and carbs. Carbs were still wrapped in plastic bags from the rebuilder.

Bought a 55 Chevy that I found a pack of nude pictures of the guys wife I got it from. He called me a day later and said he left something in the car and wanted to come by and get it. I put them back and he came by an hour later and got them. His wife was with him. Acted like I didnt know they were there. She looked relieved... Hard not to smile at her for sure.

Had an old 64 Chevy I was going to scrap on the back 40 that someone stole the non working radio out of but left behind a Craftsman tool box chock full of tools. Looked like an even trade to me.

I was helping a widow clean up her yard after her husband passed. Lots of cool stuff, lots of junk. Before hauling a hammered 54 chevy 3/4 ton to the junkyard, I decided to clean the interior, which was filled to the window with old cans, pickle bottles and newspapers. Underneath all the junk was an offenhauser 3 deuce manifold for a small block Chevy, complete with 3 97's , linkage, fuel lines attached to a fuel block, and air cleaners. I sold it at a swap meet the next morning for 400 bucks. She got the money, made her day.

Many years ago while scrounging a local yard I found a car body stuffed with 15, 16 and 17 inch trim rings and at the bottom of the pile was a perfect 33 Ford Hood. Hauled those goodies along with other old parts to the OKC NSRA Nats swap meet and made a killing.
