  3. Engine/trans combo for 200$. Then I bought a whole running car with the same size engine/trans for 300$. Sold the runner for 500$. But still have the first engine/trans paperweights that have followed me through 2 moves. Can't s**** the set-up, its a built runner.-Weeks

An Isky NOS cam for a Studebaker V-8, it's a hardface overlay cam that requires chilled iron lifters which are extinct and even if I could find a set it's a compe***ion use only because it will wear to quickly if run at low RPM for very long. The specs are street friendly but the cam material isn't. Live and learn.

That's #1 on the list, I have a whole garage full that qualify for 2nd place...........

Just bought another white elephant last night on Ebay , it's a Borg Warner Flightomatic for a '65 Studebaker. Studebaker used the Flightomatic (aka Fordomatic) starting in the early 50's and the '65-'66 Studes were Chevy powered so basically what I have is "Fordomatic" with a Chevy bellhousing. It went WAY too cheap and was only 20 miles away. I never expected to get it, I bid $0.01 over the opening price and nobody else bid. If nothng else I can use it for parts for my Stude bellhousing Flightomatic but it might be good for a 283 powered rod if a guy wanted a 50's "correct" 3 speed automatic.

  5. Similar thing happened to me about 12 years ago only it was a whole car. I had arranged to collect a 1934 Chevrolet Master Deluxe 2door sedan early Saturday morning. Collected the rented trailer the evening before. All went OK on the Saturday and got back home with time to spare. Grabbed a koffie and opened the newspaper to the vintagecars for sale. Damn! another 1934 Chevy 2door project dirt cheap. Rang the guy up and said i,ll take it, your price. So unloaded the first Chev and hit the road again. Got there loaded up and head of home again. All the way back i was thinking about the different wire wheels on the two cars and it seemed to be lighter. Got home, unloaded and noticed straight away the second car was shorter. It was a Standard Chevy, different size everything to the Master Deluxe. Only thing the same was the engine and gearbox. Anyhow i sold them both and now i try to stick to Ford. :D

    it's a long long list

first one comes to mind is when I was about 18
    bought a cream puff '62 Olds 98
the motor started to smoke and foul plugs
not knowing much about cars I suspected the worst
took it to a shop and they said the rings were shot
took the car home, pulled the motor and had it completely rebuilt
spent every penny I had and then some, about $1,400.00, this in about 1975 or 6

so I put it all back together
and it smoked just as much as before..
turns out the vacuum diafram on the fuel pump had split and the carb was drawing engine oil into the air fuel mix...

    live and learn

When I was 15 I traded a 2 door Hillman station wagon for a '57 Ford 2 door sedan - a V-8 with a stick. It was a cool car, but there was a problem with the driver’s door - the window wouldn't roll down, and it wouldn't latch properly.
There was another '57 at the gas station for sale for $25. A friend wanted the motor and I not knowing how to get the door apart figured I'd split the cost, he'd take the motor and trans and I'd swap doors and have a **** pot of other parts left over.<O:p</O:p
We dragged the car over my house and after we got the motor out I went to change doors. <O:p</O:p
As I went to pull the door off the donor car, a hardtop, I suddenly realized - hey there's no door frame on this door!!!:eek:<O:p</O:p
Amazing what you'll buy, without really thinking out, when you think it’s something you want!<O:p</O:p

    First and second wife.

No less than 10,000 cases of beer and other such mind alterering commodities.

Paid too much for a rusted out 63 shortbed chevy truck bought a donner car pulled the engine and trans got tired of working on the truck and sold it for half of what I paid for it and now have the 350/350 setting in a corner. Total cost probably around 2K for a chunk of steel taking up space.

Bought a 50 Ford in a partnership the another guy lost interest and sold it for half what we paid for it

After successfully taking a junkyard under dash air system from a 62 olds and installing it in a 53 olds I thought I would do the same for my 37 chevy p/u,the same junkyard had a 60 chevy with dealer installed air and had a 235 so I yanked it all only to realize when I got home that the unit was too big to fit under the dash and would have to get a custom made condensor so it sat around here for years. I ended up using the factoty air(crank out windshield and cowl vent) and the a/c stuff went to someone in Texas,my garage was full of parts I bought that would not work or I changed my mind but since I got a computer about all the unused parts have found new homes.

And I thought I was the only one ... HAH! The list is too long ... but every once in a while (like now) when I need to s****e up some cashola, it's nice to have some parts to get rid of. Still haven't gotten a decent bid for my wife yet though.

I bought a 3 x 2 manifold for a Pontiac here on the HAMB, mainly because I thought it was cool. Since I didn't have an engine for it, I bought one, now I'm looking for a car to put it in.

Once won an E-Bay auction for a few sets of Landrum racing springs. Good deal, I paid like $1.50 for 4 sets. Then discovered they were coming from Park City, Ut to my home outside Chicago. Shipping was over $100! Never used them either...

99 BMW M3 Convertible..... I know its OT, but he asked about the worst thing. Its a cool little car made to go, w/ no extra frills, but when I drive it everybody seems to think I've got a silver s**** hanging out of my mouth (or gold chains around my neck)..... big mistake, and still for sale.

I bought a halibrand Champ because I didn't know any better. It did not take long to figure out my ford axle parts were not going to work with it. The Champ is still sitting on my shelf collecting dust, anyone interested?

I don't usually put out a lot of big bucks on auction sites because of the fear of doing something stupid. Last mistake I made was the purchase of a new horn for one of my cars, bidding was hot and heavy, but I won it anyway.

Only to find out I could have bought elsewhere at half the price. Oh well, it works and it's cool, but I am still poorer and stupid.:(

  23. Had those too... Hahaha... but you aint seen costly...

I bought a BOAT and before I got it insured... the damn thing sank the first night I had it!!!

Recovery costs were greater than imagined!

That escapade Cost more than the boat... truck... trailer... lead up to the divorce...!

Like they say... "A boat is nothing but a large HOLE in the water where you throw all your money into"...!

And the two happiest days of a "Boat owners" life are... the day he buys the boat... and the day he sells it!!!!

I wasn't even thinking of non-car related stuff when I posted this...although it's funny to hear people who thought outside the box. Now that I think about it, I'd have to say my house here in NJ. I'll NEVER get back what I paid for it, and I'm going to take out a loan just to cover the portion of the loan that's under water, the realtor's fees, and the friggin exit tax here in NJ.....I'm willing to do that just to move out of the state so I can be free again and have more money to dump into my car.

My Roadster. I wanted it but I don't need it. I only planned on keeping it until I finished my coupe. Now I keep getting more and more attached to it.

    Haha...I hate boats....

My dad's got a nice B*** Tracker with a 150 Merc...goes real fast, fun to fish out of, looks good, it's great when it runs. Goes through 1 to 2 water pumps a year...And I'm not sure if your really want to know what it takes to change out all the fuel lines that got all hard and cracked...Even better when one went out on the lake, big oil slick behind the boat...no more fuel...good thing the batteries weren't dead, that Minkota trollin' motor came in handy.
