As the ***le says, what's it called? I have a wide-five axle but this "shaft" has been cut short beyond use and I want to replace it. I pillaged the picture off of The HAMB.. Thanks for your patience with my ignorance! Larry
Looks like a ‘coupler’ for two drive shafts, probably with similar splines. Has grub screws holding it on. Probably got a technical name, but I don’t know. Probably for industrial or farm use. I personally would not use it on a car due to balancing issues and being held on by one grub screw. Edit : google search result….. https://us.bicknellracingproducts.com/DRIVESHAFT-COUPLER--10-10-STEEL/item/DMIRRC-1447 .
It doesn't look like it was cut it looks like that's a coupler. Probably a six spline drive shaft. See the holes for the pins.
I would call that the pinion shaft, but I think the '39 one is very short, different than some of the other years of torque tube. Are you sure it's cut down?
Looks like the coupler that was inside the torque tube when we ditched the "39" trans and went to the Hydro, which was longer. The guys at Scotty's just figured the driveshaft length with 1/2 or so of it belonging in the coupler, cut the shaft down to that length and ground it down to fit inside the coupler an arc-welded them together. That's one of the only things I never broke with the Cyclone.
If you’re talking about the splined shaft that comes out of the rear end, then you’re talking about the pinion. So, yes it can be replaced by tearing the rear end down.
OK then that's the pinion shaft, and they're available new and replaceable, so even if yours is cut, it's still a very fixable rearend.
