Does the noise go away when you kill a cylinder one at a time?

  2. Don’t give up on it Lloyd ,
Some guys still do a very good job of things .
    But,,,,if you see **** under the valve covers,,,,beware !
    That’s usually a bad sign .

Never tried it. Seen how some of the valve springs looked funky so I pulled the rockers.

I'll just order new springs and change em here. Not in the mood to pull the heads lol

If you ordered new springs that match the cam you’ll need new retailers or at least 8 intake retainers to do away with the exhaust rotators as was mentioned earlier

I had a fresh rebuild that had a noise after break-in and was sure a valve or spring or lifter.
I could adjust the valve and make the noise go away for just a second. What it was doing is that when the cylinder missed waiting on the lifter to bleed down it that (#7) cylinder would miss (noise gone) then pick back up and hit again and noise comes back. Finally I pulled the wire for that cylinder and the noise would go away. Tore down engine and #7 cylinder piston was scuffed and wrist pin tight.

If it were mine, I'd pull the heads and check EVERYTHING, including the valve job. If it needs a valve job, be prepared for it to burn some oil because chances are, if it needs a valve job, it's just a rattle can rebuild. If the valve job is good, and the cylinders look good, Install the matching springs and retainers-shimmed to spec and go from there. If any thing looks dicey when you get it apart, cylinder wise, I'd start over. JMO. Sorry Buddy, I know that's not what you wanted to hear.

Man there's a new house under construction here, it's hard to pull any hot rod money at the moment, we're building out of pocket!! Pockets are full of holes :D besides, if there is a big block in the future, it's going in my car ;)

Last time I went thru this (been a long while) I kind of remember spring pockets being deeper on heads with rotaters for the exhaust? And if doing away with rotator's one needs to shim the exhaust spring pockets to get back to 1.700 (that's an example height for stock SBC's). Anyway's, my point Lloyd is this. Be sure to measure all your spring heights before reinstalling any spring at all.

Thanks Johnny, I'm gonna call the machine shop tomorrow. Truth be told, I'll probably just buy a set of heads from him and swap em out. Then let him go back through these.
