Technical What's this part for????

Hi guys, a while back I did a bit of dumpster diving and found this Weiand alloy housing..
It is approx 10 1/2'' wide, and 6'' top to bottom.. The water outlet is threaded, a very coarse thread approx 1 1/4" diameter..
My question is, what type of engine does it fit, and what is it for?
