Whats up with NO TITLES

  1. I bought a 1929 Whippet coupe without a ***le and was told by the owner it was a piece of cake getting one. So the search was on and no luck. I mean, a 1929 Whippet coupe , what are the odds? After about 8 months I actually found one!!!!!!!! Well that was all good but the ***le was a 1929 ***le with a lien for $200 . So the car actually was owned by the dealer and the car was registered to the buyer with the lien. This ***le is dated 1935 or a 1929 Whippet Coupethat showed the lien and the lien had to be notarised after being paid for transfer. This dealership no longer existed!!!!!!!! . It was also a Montana ***le. I was skeptical to go into the License dept as WA State is very tough on licensing and having a lien and an unsigned ***le means trouble( maybe). So I started seaching again on the internet and came across Broadway ***le, they told me its a NO GO in Wa state. Ugh!! I was also told that Alabama was a no go in WA state. So I located International ***le services in Las Vegas could help me. I sent them the info on my car and used the vin from the Montana ***le as the car has no Vin anywhere on it as far as I can see. Its just a body and frame and it looked like there was a tag riveted on the back of the frame but long rusted off. I waited about 2 1/2 weeks and low and behold, a returned envelope from International ***le . I opened it up and there was a bill of sale from Alabama and a registration with a letter explaining that before 1976 cars from Alabama were ***led with registration only. Well I was shocked to see the Alabama trade off by ITS but I figured what do I have to lose. I went into the Department of Motor vehicles and gave them the papers. The guy looked at the papers and then asked if I wanted collector plates ( Specialty plates) or just regular and then gave me a temp license so I could drive it around until the plate came and the ***le would be about 2-3 weeks. I cant believe it!!!! It was so easy . I will stamp my frame as soon as I get the ***le. The cool thing is I still have the original ***le from the dealer in 1935 with the same vin I will have on the WA ***le. Im ready to build the HEMI powered Whippet now!!!! Look out!!

It just makes sense.... we get all worried and in reality I get the sense that no one on this board is stealing late model luxury cars and re***ling / reselling them several states away. It stands to reason that even uninformed (uninterested???) dmv officials understand that many old vehicles no longer have ***les (yes, even in the People's Republic of Washington). I have had more trouble with transferring ***les on newer ***led vehicles, but that's because the licensing agent never believes I didn't pay "retail" and wants to get the governor's full cut on the sales tax. Mostly they just want their money, at least around here.
BTW, congrats on your whippet. About 25 years ago my brother found a really beat up aluminum Whippet hub cap (like the little model t type) on our family property.... that was all, no other parts of the car. I don't know what happened to it, if I can find it next time I'm at the fambly farmb I'll send it too you.

  3. That would be cool!
Not many people have even hear of a Whippet. I like it as it has cool belt lines and a factory 9" high front windshield. Its like a factory chop. Once I get the body off the frame and the frame all beefed up and lengthened I will be figuring out the drive train. I could throw a Pontiac 455 with trans in it and run it while building the hemi or just build the hemi and wait another year. We'll see. I was going to chop but will wait till channel it and see how it sits. Like I said 9" factory window is already getting small.

  5. This worked for me. I am the happy owner of a ***led 1929 Whippet 3 window coupe. I walked in with the paperwork that ITS provided and within 2 minutes I had a registration, temp plate and am told I will recieve collector plat in a couple weeks with a ***le the following week. Best $120 I have ever spent.Do you have a vin ?

If your local DMV won't register a vehicle without a ***le that was bought from a state that doesn't require a ***le (like here in Alabama), then they don't know what they are doing. I believe that Cons***utional law requires that they accept it (full faith and credit clause? It has been a few years since I studied Consi***utional law.). If you buy the vehicle in a state that does require ***les and the seller doesn't have one, and you also live in a state that requires a ***le, then you have issues to deal with that vary from state to state as far as remedies go.

NJ, the most over cautious PC state...which wont let its residents get away with anything without tripping over red tape for miles will allow you to register a 49 Ford as a schoolbus...and nobody is the wiser. Amazing.
