I have the boss’s car for sale on the internet. Got an email from a, what sounds like a car locater in Ireland. Says he has a customer. Asked for further details on car. Says willing to pay for car up front. Dose this sound like the start of some ******** scam? Do they even allow old cars in Ireland? I have never heard of any old cars or hot rods going there.

I sold a 68 GT Fastback to a collector in Scotland a couple years ago. Very straightforward. Had someone come pick up the car with cash in hand. No problems. Still a good idea to be wary.

Whatever you do, make sure you get the money IN HAND before you send anything away, the last thing you wanna do is lose the car.

Beware. This could be a version of the Nigerian scam that's been going on for years. Do a Google search for "Nigerian Scam" or "Advance Fee Fraud" and you'll learn more. Basically, they send you a (phony!) cashier's check for MORE than the asking price of the vehicle, and ask you to send the difference. The cashier's check appears genuine, but by the time your bank discovers it is counterfeit, you've already sent the dough to the scammer and the bank puts you on the hook for the cash.
If they say they have a third party that owes them money, and the third party will send you a big check, just delete the email.

Scamming like this is a large part of Nigeria's national economy. Be on your toes, they target all kinds of items for sale on the net, not just vehicles.

Can`t see how this could go wrong .. I bought a pair of early Rivieras from US last winter . Paid both up front. When the sellers had the payment in hand , I had my shipper pick up the Cars. No way would I have gotten those cars unless my money was for real. The only dude running a Risk was me , so as the seller ,you should not worry !! . Just dont let the car leave your lot untill you are sure that the Payment is secure . Ask them to transwer money to you bank-account , Nothing more .. nothing less !! DO NOT accept a Check !!
( Unless your bank can GARANTEE that it is valid ... Usually takes 10 - 30 Days .. ) AND , Ask for his phone # so you can Talk to them ... No phone # , NO DEAL !!!! Hope this was of some help .. [IMG]

  13. We got HAMBers in Ireland-RED OXIDE maybe?
Give them the benefit of the doubt.
Id do it this way-go along with them and arrange the sale and plan the Details/cost of pickup/transport from your place to theirs.
BUT- tell them up front that the car will have to stay in your posession till you financial ins***ution is ***ured the transaction is valid[however long that takes]. ESCROW IF YOU LIKE.
If they balk ,you know what they are like.

Klazurfers right---Get a phone # and spend a buck or two and call him. NO phone NO deal.

I just sold a 66 Malibu to a fella in AU. and after phoneing him and telling him the cond of the car, i then sent him pics and a photo copy of the ***le, as he needed to know i was on the up & up.

I started a NEW checking account, just for the purpose of him transfering a money-wire bank to bank without getting my main checking account #'s.

Everthing went smooth as clockwork and after his money came in, he had the car picked up within a couple weeks by a shipper of HIS chooseing.

So phoneing him and getting a wire money transfer (no check)is the key. HE is the one that has to hope i am honest, and gets the car described to him. We both turned out to be reputable people, so it CAN work. Good Luck

There is a Nigerian-type scam originating in Ireland, but it is just like the Nigerian scam - he wants to pay you double, etc.

Good idea & as soon as the money is in that account, wire it straight to your regular account (or cash out) before moving the car.

Redoxide is in Scotland, but V8Minor is in Ireland I think.

I've bought a bunch of cars from the US over the years & just wired the cash from bank to bank no problem, if he's for real he will go along with your request other than that he's just going to be a pain in the ***.
V8 minor is our man in Ireland maybe he could check the guy out for ya, if you got his name & phone # it would be easy to see if the guy is for real or just a scam!

Sounds like the scams going on. Check the persons feedback if you can get ahold of their e bay name. I would also make them pay in a international postal money order for the deposit(if they hae those) and cash for the balance when they pick it up.

From the way you worded your post I sounds just like thwe Nigerian scam. they send cheque, there shipper collects you forward cash etc etc .. DEFINATE SCAM do not let the car go and do not accept the Money order. like some one else mentioned you will be left with no car and a big chunk of cash to pay the bank.. Its the first time ive heard of it comming from Ireland though but it still stinks ..

When I was selling my coupe, a guy from "England" emailed me several times, sent me to a web site of his, claimed to be a HAMBer. When it was time to close the deal, he stopped emailing me completely..wouldn't even respond to a "please just let me know if you're still interested or not so I can relist!!!" email. Eventually, a cool German dude that was in Rocket Automotive the day my car first fired ended up handing me the cash personally after several phone calls and emails.

  22. What sort of car locater offers 100 less than asking price.
Look at all the cost,s involved to get your car to Ireland.
A genuine locater would try for more.
    i,d say forget it.

A friend here in Sweden had an old Volvo for sale earlier this summer, on the net.

He was contatced by a dealer in Britain who had a customer who was interested, at his asking price.

The part where in got funny was that he already had a check from his customer for a higher amount than my friend was asking. My friend was to cash it and give the leftover cash to the truck driver who was to pick the car up...

I told him it was probably a scam and he told the dealer the same, he never heard from him again...

Another clue: he mentions cell phone...unless he visits the States quite often he wouldn't use the term "cell" its just not heard over here, everyone here uses the term "mobile".
