Whatever happened to Big Wheel style brakes...you know the lever that you pulled to make it drag on the outside of the wheel and put you into a tail spin...and if you were lucky enough you didn't flip cause you had the ginormous wheel out front turned too far.

that was exactly my point. why did he do that, or are the drums just another make and not buick?

I'm running 90 fin buick drums on the back of the roadster, Avanti twin pistons (bendix) up front.
I snagged some Buick 12 in plates from from Sinkemlow that I'll be mateing up to the Ford rear. I probably won't cut the backing plates away but they will get the swiss cheese act done to 'em and i'll scoop 'em if I can find room. Not as easy to scoop a rear as a front.

I think the one ton roadster will stop just fine.

Like C9 says, I don't think we are seeing the whole picture of the brake line. When I look at my brake line, it comes out straight THEN goes into an "S" curve.

As far as "water, stones and small rodents" getting inside; my disk brake rotors are "hanging out in the breeze."

Hell, people above showed lots of wide open drums (stock), scoops, drilled backing plates and NO backing plates. So where is the problem?

I don't see a problem at all, Can't even ***** about the chrome. It wipes down easier and with less wear than paint. Cut down backing plates have been used forever in pretty harsh conditions. And if a kitten or chipmonk climbs in there to sleep, I'm pretty sure they'll vacate the premisis when the engine fires up.

They are Buicks. The backing plate can end up pretty deep in the drum depending on the hub you use. The drum was cut down (depth shortened) to match the backing plate eliminating the "tabs" My guess he did it for looks or he had some broken tabs.

Joe, reminds me of a picture I saw somewhere. Seems a snake cawled through the backing plate air scoop; BUT DIDN'T vacate (soon enough) and the owner couldn't figure out where the smell of burning flesh was comming from every time he applied the brakes. (for a short while) He didn't find it until he pulled the front drums to do an annual wheel bearing repack!
