What's yer rod cost?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by hillbillydeluxe, Sep 21, 2004.

  1. Not talking about if you outright bought your ride, but if you built it up, and/or patched 'er together, boxed the rails, and sandblasted the wheels before painting. Valve job, brake job, what have you. Just take a stab and take a guess at what ya might have into that bad ride of yours. Just curious of course.

If anybody knows the answer on my car, please don't tell me. I may start crying!

Seriously, it's really hard to tell. I have done and re-done so many things on that car, it would be impossible to put it all together for anything close to what's right.

As close as I can get would be to say a few dollars a week for around two years. You can throw in some large purchases but I made deals/bought and sold to make it happen so I think those came out even? - a few of weekends of hard work and a LOT of late nights - I'd say 90% of this car was built between 11:00pm and 3:00am. MAD generosity from HAMBers - sometimes when I'm working I'll just stop, sit down and stare in disbelief. I have never tried to figure what it costs and ultimately I don't care. Sorry that's not really what you want but there's no other way for me to answer.

Edit: I guess my answer was pretty sensitive and girly. I should probably just say it cost around fifteen grand just in case I decide to sell it someday. [IMG]

I used a lot of parts I had sitting around the garage and I still have just over $5000 and after 5000 miles, worth every cent.

somewhere between 5 and 15 percent of my yearly net income.

    pretty cheap really.

unless of course you consider it's taken better than 15 years for the first one [IMG]

  16. Strange, I just did the math the other night after staring at the car half the night... 10,650 canadian greenbacks so far. Hope to get that down by $7000 in selling off the A sedan that I bought for parts...

I tell the wife $3500. My checkbook says over twice that, and I have a used motor and a used trans. I think most guys don't really want to know. You add up the big things, then double that for the couple bucks here and there, then your about 75% there on the real cost. Gene

If you consider what I had in the 62(the only one I done any building on) and the 32, then this one cost me pretty dearly.
So far, it is worth every cent.

And it is not for sale, either.

    I love this car!

  19. I have about 18k, not counting the body and fenders in this:

  20. I think Tim and I have about 10k in the digger, that is counting the trailer and a thousand bucks worth of safety equipment.
It's also a money pit... with a new motor in the works, an interim motor being ***embled at home now, paint, chrome... tires...

Also, we ARE doing it on the CHEAP. Most racers have 5k-10k just in their motor... and there are more people that you think with 15k motors... and 20k motors... and 30k motors... when we go to the races, we have one of the most low buck operations there... and we're having fun.

    Sam.

Just went through the figures on the cars, kinda wakes you up! Some things I did good on, others, not so good.

Ten Gs and not drivable yet..still need a nine inch chunk, wiring, driveshaft, and some panels. and thats after a killer deal on engine and ****** and lots of free parts. Where did it go?

In about 7Gs on this one, not too bad. It drives good, looks not so good.

The '47 will be my most expensive build yet. It will be around $15k when it's all said and done. But that's a new motor, ******, complete suspension front and rear, insane amounts of body work including the chop and full interior. The cool part is that I've seen lesser cars sell for over $30k but this one's a keeper.

The next project, '27 Ford coupe, has all parts ready minus motor and ****** and I'm ahead $600 after the wheeling and dealings. I want to make it the subject of an article "How To Build A Hot Rod For Free or Cheap". Nothing has been donated or given to me. I've just been buying piles of parts at a time and pulling out what I need then selling the rest for a profit. Nothing crazy just smart buys.

  28. My31and37,

That's a great post! Gives me some perspective just starting out. Thanks
