TRJ is by far tops........next to Grappling Magazine. But Grappling isn't car related....just tough guys in spandex touching each other.
TRJ, Rod and Custom, Old Skool Rods or what ever catches my eye at the newstand. Do catalogs count?? I spend almost as much time thumbing through catlogs as magazines!
Super Rod because I love the cars the picture in the mag. Plus they have in progress pics of projects from custom shops across the country.
On the CC board Freiburger said that he's still going to be the "editor in chief" and steering the ship, he's just giving up his column. We'll see how that goes. I agree with JimA, TRJ is more like a cheap book than an expensive magazine...and always very well done.
Mag-neto has never failed on any account, or in any issue. To the prime directive every time. Tech you can do and want to do. True 'Back Street Heros'. Alot of the other 'scene' mags could learn much from those 'Mag Lads'. 'Nuff said. http://www.mag-neto.com/ Koops..... I subscribe to R & C and have, when it was published, since '61. I also sub HOTROD and STREET RODDER. SR has gotten very good on the how to's in about the past six issues. So, if you swore off it, you might want to take another look. I buy TRJ over the counter at Joe Reath's shop. It may take an hour or more to get out the door if he's in a story telling mood. That's any time he's there. Wife subscribes to AutoWeek. She likes to see what they are leaking from industry. I like the AW's "Escape Roads" weekly cl***ic presentation, but I cuss about what a pompous *** Keith Martin is. The race coverage is good and timely too. I read DRIVE Magazine which is also on line but I get the free issue from a friend who always gets a case of them and also MissINFORMATION both of those are calendar publications. They list events happening in different areas plus some articles. DRIVE usta have a monthly column written by ED ROTH... I miss that one... I miss Bill Burnham and BILL'S EYE VIEW in SR too. But I don't think the magazines can ever have replacements for them. Every once in a while I pick up a copy of LOWRIDER. If the Hynas aren't too scary looking. I've got enough mags (half a dozen maybe) with raggedy-***-black-and-rust with red wheels "cars" with scary tattooed sideshow "ladies" posturing on them. Thanks, but the magazines have all become the same dull blurr.
TRJ and Octane. TRJ: all the reasons above, good photography, good historical articles, great details on almost all articles, and they are thick. Downside: $$$ Octane: similar to TRJ, great photos, articles, etc. deal with alot of historical british/european race cars, but handle american as well. Leno has a column, so does Rowan Atkinson. Gotta love that. Ben
Hey Koops, thanks for the compliments! There will be some exciting news about Mag-neto in the very near future (if all goes as planned). I will post it here as soon as it's ready.
I would say The Rodder's Journal as well, although it's more of an appreciation kinda mag. And definitely a mag you keep, unlike other more 'throwaway' car mags that you read once, and the appeal is pretty much gone unless there's a good how-to article in it. For a more all-around mag, I really like Rod & Custom.
What.. No link for Rod and Kulture? What gives?... www.rodandkulture.com Jeez, its hard enough for us new(old) guys as it is! We can use all the publicity we can get! Spike
Basically,we obtain any mag that features articles or fotos that appeal to us....we look for coverage of our friends and their work.....articles that will be useful for reference.....what we like, we put in our morgue....what we object to or have no use for,we trash or use for paint pallettes.... We would NEVER chop up a SHOP RAG,though.....that mag was special. Still need to get an issue of R&K !
I read just about any hot rod or custom mag I can get my hands on if it has an article I'm interestedin, but I am not too hip on Prime Media stuff.
I import and sell a big chunk onthe non-mainstreem Hot rod/lifestyle mags, I don't get TRJ as I can't justify the $$ (but probably need too), Hop Up is damn good, I love Nash's Rod n Kustom, TRK is doing really well, looks nice ,reads a lot better then CKD did and the layout is a chunk better too. OSR is o.k. has some great pics and even some usefull tech from time to time, Burnout for the adds and artwork as much as anything else, Kustoms Ill and Hot Rod Annual are kool too..... the list goes on, I still subscribe to Rod and Custom, Hot Rod lost me a long time ago....
