I am looking 2 buy some glasspacks in the next couple of weeks is there anything paticular you guys&gals like about one brand over another I am looking for something subtle and not to loud perhaps a nice 50's melody... also do any alliance members sell them?
    Thanks..Lucifr

  2. you basically discribed smithys- they do burn up quickly though- ive had mine on my 58 cad for 2 years of daily- they still sound pretty good. they are quiet, but when you let them they roar.

cherry bombs are a little louder IMHO and are equally as not durable

maybe someone around here can tell us where to get steelpack mufflers?

I have some Thrush on my truck. They're short and very loud, almost annoying, and they resonate through the cab some.
I wouldn't suggest if you want mellow...

I always liked the Cherry Bombs -- didn't take long for the inside to burn out, and then you're basically running straight pipes... :)

Sound is hugely dependent on the engine making all that racket. You could put straight pipes on a round cam 283 and it would be quieter than smithys on a hot 392 hemi.

Collecting opinions on mufflers should always include what kind of engine the "opinionator" is using.

    Good Luck!

Smithys from what I hear on others' cars. Thrush arent too subtle, I dont run mufflers on anything.

  11. My dad always ran glasspacks on his trucks. He filled them full of diesel fuel, put them in the burn barrel and let them cook. It burns the packing out so you are basically running straight pipes, but when Johnny Law looks, he sees a muffler. Sounds great on a straight 6!

I have the smithys on my strait 6 chevy, thats split to dual exhaust and it is a nice mellow sound, Had em on for a year of daily driving and still sound the same, they seem to work well with the flame throwers too. I also put a set on a fairlane with a 260 and they sound great, not as mellow on that but tougher sounding.

yeah I think smithys are the way to go!! they are going on a caddy so it should sound nice and mello at idle and be able to let her rip when you need to...huh

    exactly.
my pontiac is a 287" v-8, stock with dual carbs. i'm running dual 2 1/2 " straight pipes with no mufflers. it's loud, but no where near as loud as a big block with straight pipes would be. more cubic inches, means more noise usually.
glass packs turned around backwards make an awesome sound...if you like loud. i found the best way to get glasspacks to rap...is to put the glasspacks directly off the headers, and then run straight pipe all the way back. the closer the glasspacks are to the manifolds /headers, the more they'll rap. pipe diameter also comes into play. small diameter pipe will get you the rapping sound. large diameter pipe will be more of a deep rumble.

Probably not "traditional" but I like Flowmasters. They've got a nice throaty sound without bein obnoxious. Great for a daily driver.

I bought a set of 30" long Thrush Hush glass packs. I am hoping the longer length will mellow them out but still have a good sound.

i got mine from Racer Parts Wholesale in Indianapolis, i bought the 12" long universal glasspacks and did the same thing by turning the dimpled openings towards the headers, glad i did too as it was just the sound i was looking for..... and you can't beat $11.58 a pop!! believe it or not, these things are very heavy duty, nice thick metal. mike

I ran 12" Mitchell's (glasspacks) behind my 401 Nailhead, was an awesome sound plus very little back pressure.
36" glasspacks behind a Y-Block is oh so mellow, real 50's sound.

being an exhaust nerd, I like them all...my favs...

60's style bellflower...Cherry Bombs, accept no substitute.

50's Custom...Smithy's or Silver Bullets. (the bullets are cool and a pain in the ass at the same time- no flanges to weld or clamp to.
sound kick ass, steel packed with a glass outer layer, and a touch bigger than usual- they are around 3 1/2 inches in diameter.)
Magnaflow round muffs look and sound alot like smithy's. Probably because they are virtually identical.

late 60's muscle "rip ass" sound...Flows or (ready for this?) Magnaflows. (especially on big inch Mopar stuff- verrry similar to thier originals.)

30's...what the heck do you need mufflers for on a 30's car? it's a Hot Rod, ain't it? ( or whatever I feel like that day if someone just has to have them. probably Cherry Bombs.)

anything but the dreaded "Midas Power Sappers" or any type of "Turbo" muffler. yuck.

  26. Not a glasspack but the hushpower II by flowmaster has a good sound. You can hear it on their website. Im going to use them on my my panel. I dont want that sound Im looking for to "burn out" after a few months of driving my car.

I have Flowmaster 40 series, straight out the back on my truck now, but I have a set of bellflowers I want to put in with glasspacks. I'm looking for a mellow tone at idle, but I want that loud "rap" when I get on it. I heard somewhere that perforated glasspacks will have a better rap that louvered ones. Anyone know about this?
