i only use real cherrybomb glasspacks. there are many that look just like them , but they have a louvered inner tube real cherrybombs have a perferated tube and sound so much deeper, and better.. i have installed smithys on customers cars, then removed them because they were just to quiet. on a basically stock chev 283 the smithys sounded like stock mufflers..

Certainly depends on the engine, what muffler works or sounds best.

For the early chevy 6, Brockman Mellowtone 12" or 17" steelpacks are my favorite mufflers.
Bullet style 24ga steel with carbon fiber packing and only 6 rows of spiraled louvers.

I used to have repro 22" Smithy's, but didn't like the small dia. 1-3/4" inner tube and too many louvers.
I cut them open, shortened them, removed the glasspacking, tried nails, then pebbles but they just never sounded right.

The famous originals were very different with a larger diameter inner tube, slots instead of louvers and steel shavings for packing.

Sound and performance also depends greatly on pipe size, length, location of the muffler and type of tip at the end.

Kind of off topic, but I have a cherry bomb on my daily(s-10) and it sounds alright. It's got a mellow tone until I pipe it. They'll cackle nicely though.

  7. it 's ALWAYS been Smithy's, since the 20's when they first came out. Some dudes just called em Smitty's cuz they didn't know any better. They now make Smithy's in 2 1/4 and 2 1/2". i have the 2 1/2's on my 32 with a Healthy 302 and they sound killer!

I have a set of the original style Cherry Bomb header mufflers bolted on the 55 with nothing else behind them. They sound really sweet at 7000 rpm, but ya smell like race gas and exhaust when ya get home.

It does crack me up the number of guys that are running zoomies or straight headers on their basically stock engines. To me that sounds like crap, way worse than any style mufflers...

If you are gonna run uncorked, ya better have some compression and camshaft to back it up in my opinion.

    Depends entirely on the engine....
Last year I ran my truck's early chevy 6 with cast iron headers and short equal length straight pipes for a while, but had to put the 12" steelpacks back on.

Unreal how loud this straight 6 can get after just 2500rpm with wide open carbs.
Driving on the freeway it sounded and felt like a 40s fighter plane in a dog fight, while firing all machine guns full blast.
    What a rush....

But I agree, good solid short mufflers are the way to go, unless you need every bit of performance for racing.

I'll add to the Brockman steel-pack vote. He was very friendly on the phone, asked questions to dial in which would be the best size/style for me and shipped them to me promtptly. I'm hoping to fire up my A this weekend and see how they sound!

I'm running one straight pipe and one Brockman steelpack on a split manifold inline 6. Was wondering what would happen if you combined one steelpack with a more conventional style muffler like a Flowmaster? Anybody used a combo like that and what the hell does it sound like?

I just recently had some 24" Cherry bombs with Bellflower tips, 2" pipe, on my '62 c10. They sound mellow at idle, but when you get on it, they rap nice. I'm sure the sound will change as they burn out, but they sound great now...

Anyone remember Walker Royal Scot glass pack mufflers from the 1970s? My Dad was running them on a '40 Chevy couple with a stock 283 back in the early '80s. Nice mellow tone.

I need to make a decision on this soon. I'll be running an L6 with Stovebolt Cast Iron headers. Should I give the Brockman Mellowtones a shot?

Safe to say, you won't regret it.
Go with 12" or 17" steelpacks and keep both pipes equal length before the muffler.
Makes the engine run more balanced and the sound is better as well.

The Brockmans are quality stuff, the people are nice and they can custom build anything you want from them (Glass, steel, etc.). I've been told they have more of the classic sound that the smithy's used to have.

  21. The bullet style glasspacks from J.C. Whitney sound fine to me, and they last a long time because there are no crimped seams.

I'm looking for something that is pretty mellow at idle and bit raspy when I get on it. I'm 29, so I don't have much to reference the sound I'm looking for to.

Dude, everyones kinda told you what to do already. Go for Brockmans, mount them as close to the header as possible for the rap when you smash on it, and call it good. As for sound reference, just go to youtube.com and search under glass pack. I just did, and theres tons of sound clips. Knock yourself out! Dont look under cherry bomb or mellow tones, you get alot of weird shit. And when youre all done installing them, post a sound file on here so we can listen too! :)

The Brockmans give a mellow burble at idle and raps when you get on it. At first I ran two Brockman steelpacks on a split I6, then removed one to straight pipe it and now it raps and pops like crazy. Not bad on regular road cruising, but LOUD on the freeway or going uphill. Like fighter plane loud. I may go back to two packs.

You want to cancel the pipe's resonant freq. and shouldn't mount the muffler exactly half way, unless you want the pipes to resonate (amplify) like crazy....louder than the mufflers.

On my car I have 17" steelpacks just behind my seat and the tailpipes over the rear axle and straight out under the bumper.
Quiet until you step on it and at higher rpm, but never too loud.

The 12"ers on my truck are right behind my seat a well, but no tail pipes at all.
The sound is rawer and louder, but never annoying.
    The opposite...!

Closer to the engine and the mufflers are louder outside and inside.
Longer and smaller dia. tail pipes will resonate more with increasing rpm.
Smaller dia. tips will raise the pitch and compress the sound.
...not that great for freeway driving...haha

While it's not too "traditional" because of the x-pipe, I have the pypes system on my '65 Nova, and I love it. Not too loud on the highway, but nice and throaty. My car was the prototype vehicle they used to make the system. It's the white one on the pypes.com website. I have the pypes "street-pro" muffler.... basically a turbo w/ no packing inside. Not sure how it would sound with a sixer.

I went to a local exhaust shop here and said I wanted a mellow rumble at idle and throaty cruising and loud when I stepped on it and they put on a couple Goerlich Xelerator mufflers. I never heard of them before but I must say they sound awesome on my 1996 Roadmaster wagon with a LT1 350 and at 29 bucks a piece they sound way better than my last set of Flowmasters and way more toned than glasspacks. I like them.
