I'm looking for a magazine that has a lot of technical stuff that relates
mostly to late twenties through the forties hot rods. What would you recommend? Car pictures and other fluff is fine, but I'm looking for something with more quality how-to articles.

I second that also. The Rodder's Journal is the type of Mag/book that really keeps you interest all the way through and has so much to read that there is not much time before the next one comes in.

Garage is cool to but for different reasons I think. Garage's quality blows me away and the articles are always pretty bad ass. I especially like reading the fine print where it will say " all rare A-Team Toys can be submitted to...." or what ever. Garage is a perfect book that gives the reader something different but all within the guidelines of what we like. Your not going to see a bunch of build specs on let say the Cole Foster built 36 but you will know what it's like to pick up strawberries in that thing. Definitely a good read if your feeling a bit burnt out on tech specs.

I think that Rod & Kulture is a really cool magazine. Where the actually quality of layout does not seem to hold up to the first two, I always like getting mine in the mail because I know that the cars will be cool and that they really care about traditional hot rods & customs.

Rod & Custom is cool but I can blow threw that magazine in one sitting at the john. Not much there, but what is there is cool.

Hot rod is really just in my subscription base because of it's roots. I think it's a good magazine for how-tos in regards to engines.

And of course there is Outlaw Biker and Skin Art magazine.:D

Sorry, boys, but the man wanted TECH stuff. No question,RJ is the top periodical out there-to call is a magazine is an insult. Most of the tech articles-as discussed previously on other threads, are repetitive thrashing of advertisers' products. How many "watch us while our professional car builders install our advertisers' IFS, air bag suspension, chop a top, etc." can you read?

There really isn't a good magazine out there constantly covering tech a garage builder can do. So read the HAMB and find an index of old rodding mags to look for the tech you want.

FWIW-the best tech mag out there is CarCraft, though it's not traditional rods. They tell you what they're building, starting with a junker, show you the build, tell you the part #'s that go in it and then tell you what it will cost. Its only about $10 a year, too.

PS-I have an index of articles I've saved over the last 5-7 years. Stuff I wanted to know about, not everything, but if you want a copy, send me a PM-it's a Word Document.

Rod 'N' Custom is quite good for tech articles, should be as my old mate Kev Elliott is tech editor!!!Garage is a Great magazine and is one of my 3 favourite magazines. As others have said being on here is probably one of the BEST places to be for tech!Where else can you get Jesse James teaching you how to metal shape!I've learned quite a bit since joining the Journal.

No kiddin. Some interesteing stuff, but tech, no

  14. I'll be honest on Garage. I used to subscribe, but it was VERY hit an miss on the issues getting to me. I would miss 1 0r 2 then get the following one. So, I started buying it in the stores. In this lil podunk town, no one carries it, so the last issue I got was the one with the little WCC magazine in it.

Back then it was a cool LIFESTYLE mag, but even they used to say "you won't find tech here". Has that changed? Does it REALLY have a lot of tech? Has the subscription/customer service become any better? Like to hear the answers from someone NOT affiliated with the mag.

You mean besides Rodder's Journal, right?

I'm no tech guy, but it seems like this place would be all the magazine you need for know-how and how-to.

My favorite magazine is prolly a tie between Rod and Culture and The Rodder's Journal, but neither of them typically have much tech - R&C has lots more than TRJ, which is just Hot Rod Porn. Honestly, I've been wowed by the first few issues of Hot Rod Deluxe. I'm sure part of it is that they have a larger budget for tech, but they've done tech articles in the style of '69 Camaro Digest, I mean, Hot Rod Magazine, but related to shit we're into and they're great. A few of their feature cars have been a touch on the flat-black with red-wheels-tip, but they've been packed with content and the tech articles have thus far been unparalleled in any modern magazine relating to cars that are HAMB-appropriate. They're 6x a year now, as well. I've also been pretty into Rod and Custom lately if you can ignore the occasional billet barge...

  21. I respect your fabrication skills. BUT, there's a "B" missing in Garage. Can you figure where? Sorry, but, I am entitled to an opinion. The magazine is FAR off point.

    HAHAHAHA. Groucho rules.

  24. I've had to answer this question on here before. If I had to just pic ONE magazine,it would be TRJ,for sure.
There are others that I buy for different reasons.
    Church-can't beat the pic's
    Rolls and Pleats-Event coverage,Dreadmans pic's,etc..
Rod and Custom is making a comeback

OSR,CKD,and Rebel Rodz...I look through them and see if any of my friends cars are inside. If not,I just put it back. I just bought the latest CKD cause Mercury Charley's car is in there. Really nice A Coupe in there too!

R&C has a good tech section as some guys have stated here already, but, I find myself reading closely the "garage section" of hot rod now and like it. It may not me all traditional, but its cool stuff that makes things go faster, and makes me think....
