In the east Beaver Springs would be your best bet. Beaver Bob is into this kind of stuff. They host the Jalopy Showdown Drags in October and a big Nostalgia weekend in July. It in my opinion has the best old time feel out of all the tracks in the North East I've ever been too. Maybe a late spring/early summer date would work there. Island Dragway has good possibilities too.

I vote for Fomosa. Last time I was there, I was standing in line with Ed Iskenderian.

I could actually go if it was at Famoso, but central West would be Redding or somewhere in Oregon.

My (biased)vote would be Thunder Valley Dragways in Marion, South Dakota. Only track I've ever raced, disregard the fact I'm only 20. I wish I could have seen Thunder Valley back in the day! Close second would have to be Beech Bend. The track I would love to go to, Old Bridge Township Raceway Park. E-town baby!

  19. i agree dag,but 42 needs to fix the moguls at the big end of the track on the tower side.i heard from some regulars that a motorcycist died there this year.one of my club members almost lost control there last year also.but just call the owner.hell swear up and down there is nothing wrong with the track.

    Whitehouse Drag Strip, Whitehouse, TX

Seen E.J. Potter there in 1963. Talk about wild. He was running Art Afrons Green Monster.

Local scene: Two red headed women racing each other then came back to pits and the hair pulling was on! Damdest fight I ever saw. One woman pulled the other woman out of her car by the hair and it was on.

Seen Pete Porter with the 40 Willys coupe that I now own sit in the back of the Willys and drink a case of beer. Went to the lanes to run the car. Twisted that four speed with the best of them. Drunk,,,,, sure! Drive a Willys coupe with a four speed........no problem. Came back down the return road, stopped, opened the trunk lid on the Willys, opened another Budweiser and it was have a nice day. Wild I tell you! Just knew then I had to have that Willys and yes I have it today. Everytime I open that trunk seems I still smell that Budweiser!

Those early 60's were a great time to be alive and those times will never be repeated. I was there and lived to tell about it and remain grateful for all!

Thanks for letting me rant, now back to the good stuff!

  27. Ryan, I'll give you a few for the Sunshine State. First is Sunshine Speedway in Clearwater Florida. I know you really REALLy want 1/4 mile, and this track was 1/4 mile until they built a highway just past the far end of the track about 40 years ago. So lots of history here, and as time went by, cars literally were going through the shutdown area and crossing the highway, pretty scary days back then. The owners knew they had no choice to cut it down to 1/8 mile. They still have some VERY quick cars and bikes running there. Pretty self explanitory, Clearwater Florida has endless arrays of activities outside the track too. You will also only be about an hour drive from Lakeland which is where the HAMB Drags will take place in October. This track has a LOT of history, but sadly only 1/8 mile. Harley guys, you need to come down each year for the ALL HARLEY DRAGS, goes without saying. The third track in Florida that I suggest and I run is Bradenton Motorsports Park in bradenton Florida, definitley 1/4 mile, I apologize that I cant lay down some history, but its a REALLY nice local track. Nice rural setting too. Moroso/West Palm is extremely nice, although I dont think its what your looking for. I hope that helps, TR
