There are definitely a lot of them around here in Wisconsin due to farm use, the cowl stayed on the frame when it got converted into a doodlebug tractor or mule engine or whatever and the doors, lids and skins got turned into "rock boats" (basically a sled to drag stones out of fields or whatever). Lots of grille shells for the same reason.

  2. Yes, on ddodlebugs and stationary engines. You gotta remember two things. Scrap drives in the war years and the fact that places here in the Midwest and West did not get electrified until the 50s. Some in rare cases later than that. So, an engine running a sawmill or thresher were pretty important. The body parts got in the way and were tossed, lots to become scrap during the war or victim to ladybird johnsons highway beatification farce. That bitch was more evil than her hubby ;)

The aliens took all the deck lids and 32-34 pickup doors and genetically modified them into cowls.
Geez, I thought everybody knew that.......

I totally agree, the radiator and hood would have been saved if it good shape. Bob

Deck lids and later trunk lids and hoods from the late 1930's made great "Stone boats" here in New England and made it easy to move stone walls around. I bet the big rocks got moved in the winter when sliding on ice & snow made it real easy. Bob

i live here in fla on the coast, MANY A's & v8'S were cot up for beach buggies, only the cowl and split rims to run the beach, many are still on the beach, caught by waves. few years ago i was treasure hunting when my detector went crazy i dug down and hit what thought was a treasure chest , further i dug, it was the top of a car, whole car was buried.

This is a model A cowl that I'm playing around with for my single seater I cut it slid it in to narrow it but leaving it long then pulled it together letting the center hump up...Now I'm looking at these 34 Pontiac fenders I would like to incorporate them into the body there's a pic also of a body that I mocked up for ideas....[IMG][IMG][IMG]

In my area of the south A's were cheap in then late 40 to mid 50s. Ten Dollars to 60 dollars could buy them all day. Well all the teen age kids wanted to go faster so all the body parts were removed and what we called a cut down was born. Just the things you needed to drive were left on the car. Most had a hood to keep out the rain,. One with a good engine might do 70 MPH. No insurance regs in that day . I know for a fact that many times 10 to 16 year olds would pool their money and buy a car because we did............... Bobby..

Fortunately, no, they're not, but there's enough of them up there asking moon-money that people who use the highest listings on ePay as their price guide suddenly think they're worth a fortune.
