I was out driving the other day, and I found a stash of cars and trucks. The one of particular interest is a 39 - 47 COE. The man wants $550. which seems like a great price except... The back of the cab is thrashed hard. The area around the rear window is even creased. The usual rust in the back of the cab. Fenders are fairly rough, but salvagable. It is a roller with about a 12 foot flatbed. Salvage would pay for the fuel and time to get it home. It's about a three hour drive one way. The bad part is the grille is gone. I don't know how hard it will be to come up with the grille & hood. I ***ume it is a 41- 47, it has the 41 pickup style stainless badges on the side. Wescott's fibergl*** makes some of the parts, but not the grille. Does this seem like a good buy? It may be the ice breaker to buy some of his other cars which seem a little on the high price side. If I knew I could get a grille, I would probably buy it, set it on my one ton ch***is, and slowly start straightening it out. Seems like no one can stand to see me working on a project, and I would probably sell it to them half finished. Many things to consider. Greg
I would get it only if I could finish the project. The grill maybe hard to find, but you will find one even if it takes a year.
I would say get it...It's only a matter of time before they start making reproduction grilles..i hope...I am missing the top pieces for my grille also. Price sounds fair. I would say if the back of the cab is too bad to fix, then cut it off, find another good pickup cab of the same year and make yourself a crew cab...just a thought...
I vote for the purchase. Somebody is bound to have an extra grill if you list here in the "Wanted" section. Besides, why should we suffer alone???
If enough of us need grilles, we should be able to cast one easy enough. My neighbor used to build gl*** 32 bodies,so I have the means. The back of the cab is quite a bit different than a regular pickup, but worse case it could be changed. No stranger to cutting and splicing either.
Fibergl*** fenders are available from Wescotts, Fibergl*** 38 style grill shell from Ron Holland, insert for the 38 grill will have to be custom built. the 40-47 grill is harder to find, but every once in a while you see a decent one for about $700.
Will probably get it, but I have to save some coin first. Restoring my building/house has kept me on a very tight budget lately. But, watch for upcoming posts on "How Hot Rod is your house". May have gotten a few leads on a grille.
