Technical Whatzit, Ford Banger Edition.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by ccain, Feb 14, 2023.

  1. Okay, so... I recently acquired this banger, and I'm trying to figure out exactly what it is.

I've checked over at Ford Garage and can't seem to find anything. Nothing with this prefix. Can anyone lend a hand?

There are no other marks on the block except for a #2 stamped where the diamond would be on one of those diamond blocks.

that number is not going to tell you anything. unless it matches your title. Do you see the grinder swirl left after they ground off the Ford number?

But the 1 is the proper Ford style.

  4. There were a lot of large remanufacturers (think Sears and Wards) who renumbered their rebuilds. It seems weird for them to do that, but perhaps at that time it was done to prevent cross-identification of different individual cars???

  5. Yeah, I saw that. I had read that A and AA engines were stamped on the unmachined cast "hump" or "bumpout" whatever it's called, and that some Canadian and German Ford-Koln blocks were stamped into a machined surface on that bumpout.

But... the area on my block does appear to be machined down well beyond anything I've seen online. So, a renumber is probably the case here.

The guy I got it from said it was a '28 Model A engine, but I don't know where he got that info. The engine had been in a '29 closed cab truck, so... I dunno.

Thanks everyone!!! You guys all ROCK!!!:cool::cool:

  6. My guess would be that it was rebuilt at the Ford plant in Long Beach thus the LB. This would explain the correct stamps. Maybe it was rebuilt elsewhere and shipped to the Long Beach plant (where they numbered it) for installation. Try posting on fordbarn.com.

Could have been a stationary engine, farm equipment engine, industrial application, etc. I also have an engine with weird numbers. I can't find any info on what it may have been used for. I know it was last used in a car. Ford sold a lot of engines to industrial firms and such, who probably used their own methods of identification. I know where it's going next, though. :)
