Technical Wheel alignment in a subframed car??

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by mr57, Aug 25, 2017.

  1. I had new custom springs put in my Lincoln today, and should have a wheel alignment done. What specs would I use for the camber and caster? what the car the subframe came out of - 1973 Nova - or is there some 'safe' generic spec that would work? The subframe is in a 51 Lincoln.

The donor car would be a good starting point. If the guy doing the alignment knows his stuff, he might make some adjustments after a test drive.

  3. Yep, just what Squirrel said. My 51 Ford avitar and my 50 Merc both have Nova units under them. Both alignments started with spec's for said Nova then just a tad more fussing. Once driven and a light hand on the wheel you can read what they are doing and what you might want to improve on with a little more caster or camber. Each car is different even with the same unit. It was No challenge at all and just so ya know the book spec's are just a guide line for any kind of alignment.

Just try and find a real front end guy , not some kid who can only do what the machine tells him to do.
Took my Morris Minor with a Fatman cross member and Mustang 2 components. I aligned it in my shop with a spindle mount caster camber gauge and my home made toe in gauge. Took it to a shop and they charged me $ 75.00
and I could barely drive the car home.
Realigned it myself and drove it for 2 years. They said they did the best they could and because it wasn't stock there was no redo on their end.

  5. I've done them before, I did a Camaro clip on a '41 Chevy alignment, right with the Camaro specs and it test drove nicely. The only wild card would be the caster if anything, it may need a little more at the worst case.

  6. Went in with the donor specs, car was spot on with the toe in and camber. Minor tweaking and she flies down the road straight as an arrow. Best part was the service guy said that they really didn't do anything so the alignment was on the house! Thanks everyone for your input!
