1952-59 Ford Wheel and tyre size question

Discussion in 'Off Topic Hot Rods & Customs' started by 4t6ford, Sep 28, 2011.

  1. Hey Guys n gals ,
need some input on what size wheels and tyres you are running under your '55-'56 's please .
Here's the story , friend of mine has just bought a '56 Vicky , it is on stock rims with narrow whitewall . he wants to get a set of early 5 spokes ( torq thrust or similar ) and is thinking possibly running 15x6 on the front and 15x7 on the rear ( I already told him he wont get any bigger than 7" under the rear ) .
The Vicky is stock hieght at present but will get a very mild drop ( prob 2" all round ) and is already fitted with a 9" rear out of a '57 fairlane .

Your thoughts and suggestions please .....

I'm running 15x8 with 235/60's all around but I'm running a 98 Blazer rear end, 4 inches narrower than stock.

If he wants to go with 15x7 in the rear and 14x7 in the front, let me know. Shipping would be hell, but I have some Cragars that Im still trying to get rid of! ;)

You should jack the car up like you would do if you have to change a flat and measure the distance between the brake drum and inside of the fender . That way you will know how wide of a tire you can go with so you can change a tire when need be . Then figure out the backspace and go from there . Can't use a tire too wide if you can't get the tire up between the fender and brake drum . Now if you are planing on adding the lower blocks make sure you add the block first , then take the measurements .
If you have some friends with wider tires and wheels maybe they will let you try and see if they will fit your Vicky or not .

  5. Thanks for the input so far guys . Dragonknucks you're right shiping could kill the deal  . Jim , I follow what you're saying ... problem is this car is still in the USA and as my darling wifeys car here has an 8 inch out of god only knows what under it I can't use it as reference either  . ... She reckons I lie about most measurements anyway ...

Rears are 17x8 and 30mm offset I am running 255x 45 tires with no clearence problems. Actually I have nice room to the inner fender. I'm also on a 9" Versalles rear though.
